Mathias Jung (born December 17, 1958 in Trusetal ) is a former German biathlete .

Mathias Jung started for the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof , where he was trained by Herbert Kirchner , Dietmar Böse and Hartmut Sommer. At the Junior World Championships in 1978 and 1979 he won gold with the relay teams of the GDR and the silver medals in the individual. The sports soldier , a non-commissioned officer of the NVA , was GDR runner-up in the sprint in 1980 and has been the starting runner of the GDR relay at international competitions for the next few years. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he won the silver medal behind the Soviet Union with the relay, which included Jung Klaus Siebert , Frank Ullrich and Eberhard Rösch . At the Biathlon World Championships in Lahti in 1981 , the GDR relay won gold with Jung as a starter, as did in Minsk in 1982 . Silver was added again in 1983 in Antholz . The best individual result at a World Cup was fourth place in the individual from Lahti. After his active career, Jung, who is a trained electrical mechanic , worked in the ski workshop of the VEB Kombinat Sportgeräte in Schmalkalden .
