Herbert Kirchner (born May 16, 1937 in Lauscha ) is a former German biathlete .
The Thuringian Kirchner from ASK Vorwärts Oberhof switched from cross-country skiing to patrol running in 1958/59 and took part in the 1960s in Squaw Valley with the all-German team in the Olympic Winter Games in biathlon over 20 km. Since biathlon was on the Olympic program for the first time and Kirchner was awarded the starting number 1, he is the first biathlete ever to take part in the biathlon at the Olympics. He finished the race with 4 misses in 13th place. After his active career, he became a biathlon coach. He lives in Zella-Mehlis .
