Simon Schempp (born November 14, 1988 in Mutlangen ) is a German biathlete . His greatest successes to date have been winning the world championship title in the 2017 mass start , the silver medal in the mass start at the 2018 Olympic Games and two fourth places in the overall World Cup ratings in 2014/15 and 2015/16 .

Career

Simon Schempp lived in Uhingen as a child , where he also trained for the first few years, and continues to work for the Uhingen Ski Guild . At that time there was only a small training group under the supervision of his father Reiner Schempp, who himself was a biathlete member of the national team. Since the training conditions in Uhingen were not the best, Schempp also trained in Gosheim or Ulm . The units there took place under the direction of Reiner Schempp, Mathias Rösch and Roland Schmauder. Between 2004 and 2008 Schempp attended the ski boarding school in Furtwangen and was trained there by Steffen Hauswald . He did his Abitur at the ski boarding school and was also awarded the Alfred Maul Memorial Medal for outstanding performance in sport , which was presented to him by Simone Hauswald . He has been training in Ruhpolding since 2008 and competes for the Zoll Ski Team .

Schempp has competed internationally in the Junior European Cup since 2006. In his first race in Obertilliach he won a sprint and came second in the pursuit race. In 2007 he ran his first Junior World Championship in Martell . In South Tyrol he was fifth in the individual, fourth in the sprint, won bronze in the pursuit race and, together with Daniel Böhm , Sebastian Berthold and Christoph Stephan, the gold medal in the relay competition. A year later in Ruhpolding, ninth place in the individual was the worst result, in sprint and pursuit he was fifth and won the bronze medal with Manuel Müller , Arnd Peiffer and Florian Graf with the relay. The 2009 season was particularly successful. At the Junior World Championships in Canmore , Schempp reached sixth place in the sprint, was fifth in the individual, won silver in the pursuit behind Lukas Hofer and the gold medal with the relay alongside Erik Lesser , Benedikt Dolls and Grafs. At the European Junior Championships in Ufa he just missed a medal in fourth place in the individual, in the sprint and the pursuit he won the silver medals behind the Norwegian Tarjei Bø . For the relay race he was used in the men's relay race, which was held at the same time as the European Junior Championship . Together with Böhm, Norbert Schiller and Christoph Knie , he won the silver medal behind the relay from Norway and showed a good performance in his first race in the adult category.

After the European Championships, Simon Schempp was appointed to the World Cup team for the first time by national coach Frank Ullrich and made his debut with a 24th place in the individual at the Biathlon World Cup in Whistler , the dress rehearsal for the 2010 Winter Olympics . In the sprint two days later he even reached 17th place. The next day he came to his first appearance in a German relay. As a starting runner, he formed the youngest season ever to start in the World Cup for Germany, together with Böhm, Peiffer and Michael Rösch , and came third with it, this was his first step onto the podium in the World Cup. After a mixed season in 2009/10 , in which Schempp managed half the Olympic standard and showed two good relay appearances, he was traded as a candidate for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . But a massive drop in performance, which was due to physical exhaustion, almost prevented the nomination. The DOSB finally nominated Schempp for the games. There he was used as the starting runner of the German relay team and finished fifth , together with Andreas Birnbacher , Arnd Peiffer and Michael Greis . A few days later, he and Erik Lesser , Daniel Böhm and Christoph Knie won gold in the German men's relay at the 2010 European Biathlon Championships in Otepää . At the World Cup in Kontiolahti 2010, Schempp took second place in the German mixed relay with Kati Wilhelm , Magdalena Neuner and Erik Lesser. At the following World Cup at Holmenkollen , Simon Schempp ran after ninth place in the sprint in pursuit with faultless shooting performance to second place, making it for the first time in an individual race in the World Cup to make it onto the podium. In the last race of the 2009/2010 season, he achieved his greatest success to date. In Chanty-Mansiysk he became world champion in the mixed relay together with Magdalena Neuner, Simone Hauswald and Arnd Peiffer.

Schempp together with Jakov Fak and Jean-Guillaume Béatrix on the podium after the World Cup sprint in Nové Město 2015.

Nationally, Schempp won the individual title of the German Junior Championships in Langdorf in 2007 , and bronze in the Kaltenbrunn sprint in 2008 . At the German Championships in 2008 , sixth place in the sprint was the best individual result, in the cup standings (overall standings) he finished 17th. National trainer Franz Bernreiter described the strong runner Schempp as the greatest German talent in biathlon. At the German Championships in 2009 , Schempp secured third place in the relay and in the mass start.

Together with Andreas Birnbacher , he made his triathlon debut at the 1st Chiemsee Triathlon in 2012. In the field occupied by numerous triathlon professionals, he came in 21st place with a time of 4: 16: 48.3 for the two kilometers of swimming, 80 kilometers of cycling and 20 kilometers of running.

On January 17, 2014, Schempp won his first World Cup race at the same time as Lukas Hofer in the sprint competition in Antholz. The following day he won the pursuit race and celebrated his second World Cup victory. At the Olympic Games in Sochi , Schempp won a silver medal as the final runner of the relay. For this, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on May 8, 2014 by Federal President Joachim Gauck . He had previously missed a possible medal in sixth place in the pursuit due to a mistake in the last shot.

Simon Schempp made history with victories on January 22nd and 24th, 2015 in Antholz by becoming the first athlete to win the same races in two consecutive years at the same location. On March 14, 2015, he won the 2015 World Championships in Kontiolahti , Finland, together with Erik Lesser , Daniel Böhm and Arnd Peiffer . In 2016, he won silver in the mixed and men's relay at the World Championships in Oslo .

At the 2017 Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen , he won gold with the mixed relay and, with gold, his first individual World Championship medal in the final mass start race.

At the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang , Simon Schempp won the silver medal in the mass start and the bronze medal in the relay .
