Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac is a city in the Bas-Saint-Laurent administrative region of the Canadian province of Québec .

On May 5, 2010, the two cities of Cabano and Notre-Dame-du-Lac were united to Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac.

Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac is located on Lac Témiscouata on Route 185 . 2006 Cabano had 3199 inhabitants and extended over an area of 111.97 km².

The origin of the name Cabano is controversial. It could go back to the Montagnais word cacano , which denoted a landing point , because from there it went to the Portage du Témiscouata, which connected the lake with the St. Lawrence River . Another explanation gives the earlier name for Lac Long, which was called Cabaneau. It is possible that the name goes back to wabano , which the Indians used to describe their hunting lodges. This type of hut was adopted by French hunters and settlers.

history

With the introduction of the feudal order in New France ( Coutume de Paris ), the area was divided into seigneuries , huge mansions on which peasants lived who had to do taxes and labor. In 1683, the deputy of the French king, the Intendant de Meules, established Charles-Aubert de la Chenaye as the landlord in the Madouesca (Témiscouata) rule.

It was not until 1783 that a path to St. Lorenz was built, which is now called Vieux-Chemin, or Old Path. It only became accessible for carriages in 1843. In 1828, the first sawmill, which Alexandre Fraser built on Lac Témiscouata, was built, as well as a grain mill. Denis Pelletier was one of the first settlers, and John Caldwell built a first sawmill.

Fort Ingall, named after Lennox Ingall , was built in 1839 . In the meantime, five families lived in the region. The trigger, the bloodless aroostook dispute between Great Britain and the USA , ended in the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842 .

Settlement on a larger scale did not begin in Témiscouata until 1850. A first large sawmill was built in 1865 and in 1889 a rail link, the Témiscouata Railway , reached the area between Edmundston and Rivière-du-Loup .

The Catholic parish of Saint-Mathias de Cabano was founded on May 28, 1906 with the installation of Abbé Ernest Gagnon, after the church was built in 1901. However, it burned in 1972.

On September 9, 1907, when Cabano was founded, David Michaud became the first mayor of the Municipalité . From 1928 to 1930, Gray Owl lived in the town, a trapper and writer. 1941 to 1944, the town hall, the Hôtel de ville , which initially inhabited Émilien Morin, the Marcgand de Bois . He became mayor in 1947, which is how it got its current name. The building was restored in 1991.

However, on May 9, 1950, half the city burned down. In 1962 Cabano achieved the status of a city (Ville). In 1976 the Cascades paper mill, which is now called Norampac , was established. In 2000 the Clair Soleil Park was inaugurated.
