history
middle Ages
The first detectable settlement (marking of the Muotho) arose around 500 AD and later, but the site only became better known around 1100 to 1200. The manors changed quickly: Hohenstaufen , Weinsberg and Rechberg . Gradually, Gmünder monasteries and families became the main landowners. The place name "Mutlangen" was first mentioned in 1293 in the writings of the Lorch Monastery , which probably belonged to Mutlangen. With the document dated July 22, 1293, Count Eberhard I of Württemberg took the Lorch monastery and its goods under protection.
Early modern age
In 1581 Mutlangen was taken over by Schwäbisch Gmünd . One of the Rechberg gentlemen loaned his hamlet Mutlangen to the city for lack of money. The pledge could no longer be redeemed by the Rechbergers.
Württemberg time
In the course of mediatization , the Free Imperial City of Gmünd lost its independence in 1803 and became part of the Electorate (or, since 1806, the Kingdom) of Württemberg . Mutlangen thus became part of Württemberg and from then on belonged to the Gmünd Oberamt .
During the administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg in 1938, the Oberamt became the district of Schwäbisch Gmünd , to which Mutlangen belonged until the end of 1972.
post war period
Since the place had become part of the American occupation zone after the Second World War , it had belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden since 1945 , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.
Around 1945 Mutlangen had about 1200 inhabitants and a predominantly agricultural employment structure. Immediately after the end of the war, numerous expellees and refugees were integrated into the community. In the following years, some industrial and commercial enterprises settled in the community, so that Mutlangen's structure changed from a farming village to an industrial and residential community. The population has risen continuously to almost 6600 people.
As part of the municipal reform, the administration and the municipal council decided, despite efforts to the contrary by the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd, in favor of the municipality's independence. This could be ensured , among other things, by the establishment of the administrative association Schwäbischer Wald , to which, apart from Mutlangen, the communities Ruppertshofen , Spraitbach , Durlangen and Täferrot belong. In 1973, as part of the reorganization, the district of Pfersbach, which until then had belonged to the community of Großdeinbach , was incorporated into Mutlangen. The community itself came to the new Ostalbkreis due to the district reform in Baden-Württemberg .
Peace movement
Mutlangen became known worldwide through the Pershing II rockets stationed on the Mutlanger Heide from 1983 to 1990 . In order to achieve the withdrawal of the nuclear missiles, anti-missile opponents repeatedly organized peace camps and called for the depot to be blocked. The Mutlangen press hut became the focal point for the peace demonstrators and the starting point for rocket tracking and actions. 2999 blockers were arrested here. They were reported for coercion and, as a rule , sentenced by the responsible district court in Schwäbisch Gmünd to fines of 20 daily rates. The Federal Constitutional Court later overturned the conviction as unconstitutional. With the INF treaty , the Pershing II missiles were withdrawn from Mutlangen. The site of the former nuclear weapons storage facility is now a new development area.
Religions
Even after the Reformation was introduced in other areas of Germany, Mutlangen remained Catholic. Even today the Roman Catholic community with its St. George's Church is dominant. But there is also a community center for the few Protestant believers, which is part of the Lindach-Mutlangen parish .

coat of arms
The coat of arms of the municipality of Mutlangen was awarded by the state government of Baden-Württemberg on February 1, 1954. In the red field there is a silver, equal-armed, wide cross, covered with the red silhouette of the narrow side of St. George's Church. The road cross with the church is a symbol of the community and indicates its convenient location. The colors red and white (silver) remind us that the village belongs to the area of the former imperial city of Schwäbisch Gmünd.
Town twinning
A partnership with Bouxières-aux-Dames near Nancy has existed since 1964 . In 1992 a partnership was also concluded with Vaskút , a place in the Hungarian Batschka with a Danube Swabian population of around 30%.

Mutlangen is connected to the national road network by the federal road 298 ( Gaildorf - Schwäbisch Gmünd ). Roads 1155 and 1156 are important for regional traffic.
