history

Early history

The place probably originated as an early medieval settlement between 700 and 900 AD and was founded by the Franks. Westhausen comes from the name Westhusen, which means something like "houses in the west". The first documentary mention in the list of goods of the Ellwangen monastery is from 1136. While Lippach mainly belonged to the House of Oettingen , Westhausen was part of the prince provost of Ellwangen .

19th and 20th centuries

As part of the mediatization and secularization due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , both places came to the Kingdom of Württemberg , where they belonged to the Oberamt Ellwangen . During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , the places came to the Aalen district in 1938 .

On April 22, 1945, when units of the 12th US Armored Division were passing through the district of Lippach, there was a violation of international martial law . Some disinhibited GIs killed 36 prisoners in uniform of the Waffen SS, most of whom were very young. This event was later referred to as the Lippach massacre .

In 1945 the places became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

After the Second World War , Westhausen grew to around 3,000 inhabitants through the use of the former Collis works - an armaments factory during World War II.
