history

In 1962 the company founder Burkard Hellbach opened the first shop under the name NK Discount in Essen - Rüttenscheid . In 1976 a logistics warehouse was opened in Bindlach. By 1987, NKD had around 300 branches and continued to expand: in 1989 there were already 500 branches in West Germany. From 1990 branches were opened in the new federal states, also through the takeover of the department stores of the consumer cooperatives in Cottbus and Dresden-Land. In 1992 the administration building in Bindlach was rebuilt. In 1995 NKD expanded to Austria and took over around 100 branches of Herz TPS (low price shop), which were renamed NKD in 2004.

In 2001, the company's founder, Hellbach, left the company. Uwe Lippe, Helmut Müller and Helmut Wirsieg became the new managing directors. In 2003 DAUN & Cie. Corporation the company. In 2004 NKD had a total of 1000 branches, and 65 branches of the h + e stores of Hummel & Edenhofer Handels-GmbH & Co. KG, based in Massing, were taken over. In 2005, 34 branches of the insolvent Alltex-Eisel GmbH & Co. KG, based in Reilingen, were taken over .
