The Jagsttalbrücke near Westhausen in East Württemberg in the Ostalbkreis is a 547 m long bridge that crosses the Jagst Valley as part of the Federal Highway 7 .

location

Near Westhausen , northeast of the Württemberg district town of Aalen , the federal highway 7 crosses the relatively wide and flat valley of the upper Jagst. This is located on the edge of the Alb ascent to the Härtsfeld .

Especially on the north side of the river, the terrain rises barely noticeably over several 100 m. That is why it was discussed for a long time whether this is the optimal location for the abutments of a valley bridge. With the necessary consideration of the landscape, the variant of a generous bridge over the valley was finally chosen. In this way, embankments could be avoided. The K 3319 runs from Ellwangen to Westhausen below the bridge .

Data

The topography and altitude left hardly any space for a bridge design. So a girder bridge was chosen. This includes two separate superstructures, divided into 13 fields with standard support widths of 43 m. The total length of the bridge is 547 m. In addition to the normal equipment such as carriageway crossings, guardrails and railings, the bridge also received noise barriers 1 m high. The road surface consists of two layers of mastic asphalt of 4 cm each on a bituminous welding membrane as a seal. Construction work began in August 1984 and the bridge was completed in 1987.

The construction costs amounted to approx. 20 million DM (in today's purchasing power approx. 18 million €).

geology

The foundation area of the structure lies in the border area between the Black and Brown Jura . In the area of the Jagsttal there are loose rock deposits up to 7 m thick . So only the two abutments and a pair of pillars could be founded flat. All other pairs of piers had to be anchored in the load-bearing ground using large bored piles . The length of the piles is 5–7 m on the valley flanks and up to 25 m in the middle of the bridge.
