geography

Geographical location

Obergröningen has a share in the natural areas of the Eastern Alb foreland and the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains , both of which are part of the Swabian Keuper-Lias region . It is located north of Schwäbisch Gmünd on the Frickenhofer Höhe , a ridge that stretches south of the Kocher . The municipality extends from the Kocher valley at 355 meters above sea ​​level to the Galgenberg at 515 meters above sea level and at Algishofen also extends somewhat to the right side of the Kochers.

The community borders in the north and east on Abtsgmünd , in the south on Schechingen and in the west on Eschach .

history

Obergröningen initially belonged to the Oberamt Gaildorf . When this was dissolved in 1938, the place came to the district of Schwäbisch Gmünd , with which it was dissolved by the district reform in 1973 in the Ostalb district.

Religions

After the introduction of the Reformation , Obergröningen became Protestant. In 1852 410 of the 430 inhabitants belonged to the Evangelical Church . The Protestant parish of Obergröningen also includes Hohenstadt and Schechingen. Several members of Jehovah's Witnesses have also lived in the community since the 1980s. Attractions

The Nikolauskirche was built in the 14th century in the Romanesque style. The loopholes in the square tower identify it as a fortified church . Above the nave there is a large room in which the villagers could seek shelter in times of war.
