The Frickenhofer Höhe is up to 565.2  m above sea level. NHN high mountain range, wooded on its slopes, in the Ostalb district in Baden-Württemberg (Germany), with northern foothills in the district of Schwäbisch Hall . The elongated, plateau- like landscape is named after the village of Frickenhofen , a district of Gschwend located on the narrow north-western tip .

In the natural division of Germany, it is the sub-unit No. 102.03 of the Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land in the southwestern German stepland . It belongs to the natural area foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb (main unit 102).

geography

location

The Frickenhofer Höhe is located south of the Limpurger Mountains , north of the Albuch , part of the Swabian Alb , and east of the Welzheimer Forest . The ridge lies in the triangle of the cities of Gaildorf in the northwest, Aalen in the southeast and Schwäbisch Gmünd in the southwest. The Frickenhofer Höhe extends in the form of an elongated arc from Schönberg (district of Gaildorf) in the north to Abtsgmünd in the southeast. The municipalities within the landscape include Gschwend , Eschach , Göggingen , Ruppertshofen and Schechingen .

The northern border of the Frickenhofer Höhe or its foothills there is the lowest course of the "Fichtenberger" Rot, which comes from the west and flows into the Kocher at Gaildorf-Unterrot . The remaining borders form one after the other, counter-clockwise, the “Gschwender” Rot and its two outgoing waters, the Lein and Kocher. The Gschwender Rot flows south from Gschwend through the small villages of Birkenlohe , Hönig and the Rehnenmühle reservoir to its confluence with the Lein in Täferrot and demarcates the ridge to the west towards the Welzheimer forest. As far as Heuchlingen, the Lein first runs the southern border in an easterly direction, after which it separates the ridge from the Welland, which begins opposite on the right, on a north-east course until it flows into the Kocher in Abtsgmünd . The left edge of the northwestern Kocherlauf from Abtsgmünd via Sulzbach-Laufen to Unterrot is its most distinctive dividing line from the Limpurger Mountains.

The Frickenhofer Höhe is part of the main natural area foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb ( Eastern Alb foreland ; No. 102) or the sub-natural area of Albuch foreland (102.0). A small part in the northwest of the landscape, near the Gschwender districts of Frickenhofen, Mittelbronn and Schlechtbach , is an eastern part of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park .

Surveys

The slopes of the Frickenhofer Höhe are steep and densely forested. The height itself is like a plateau with only a few elevations rising above the surroundings. The highest point is the Hohentannen with a height of 565.2  m , between Frickenhofen and Rotenhar . This is easy to reach from the Hohetannen hiking car park on the road between Frickenhofen and Rotenhar. From here you have a wide view over the wooded heights and valleys of the Keuperbergland with its Stubensandstein areas and the Lower Jura - witness mountains . In the north, the view extends to the Hohenlohe plain and the eaves bay of the Kocher near Schwäbisch Hall . In the south you can see the Kaiserberge as well as the foreland of the Alb and the Albtrauf .

The Frickenhofer Höhe elevations and their foothills (some of the following are only hall names) - sorted by height in meters (m) above mean sea level (NHN):

From a geological point of view one could also consider the Zeugenberg

still attributable to the Frickenhofer Höhe. It is covered by an isolated Black Jurassic cap, about 1.5 km west of the Hohentannen next to the L 1080 state road from Gschwend to Rotenhar in the forest.

Running and standing waters

There are no larger rivers from the Frickenhofer Höhe. The longest is the Götzenbach , which rises at Seifertshofen and flows into the Lein at Leinzell . Almost all streams flow in a southerly direction and flow into the Lein. Over the millennia they have cut deep blades into the Frickenhofer Höhe. The Rehnenmühle reservoir (completed in 1967) on the "Gschwender" Rot and the Götzenbach reservoir (1973) on the Götzenbach were created to protect the Leintal from flooding . The lakes are popular local recreation destinations. There is also the Federbachsee , completed in 1982 , a reservoir on the smaller Federbach , which also flows south to the Lein about 3 km east parallel to the Götzenbach. A couple of short streams that arise in the area of the Hohentannen and Hoher Nol elevations and run northwards, sooner or later drain into the Kocher via the northeastern Steigersbach .

geology

The Frickenhofer Höhe is formed by rocks from the Black Jurassic , which cause the leveling over the rise in the tuber marl (uppermost Mittelkeuper ).

Economy and Infrastructure

The infrastructure of the Frickenhofer Höhe is predominantly agricultural.

Wind turbines

For the Frickenhofer Höhe, a total of eight locations were specified in the East Württemberg regional plan, which must be kept free exclusively for use by wind power. One of them is on the border between Ruppertshofen and Eschach , here is the Striethof wind farm . It covers an area of around 29 hectares and offers space for five “space-significant” wind turbines with a nominal output of 2 MW each. All five wind turbines with a capacity of two megawatts each have been in operation since the beginning of 2010. Their hub height is 100 m, with a rotor diameter of 80 m the tips rise up to a height of 140 m, which is why the systems are visible from afar and provide orientation.

traffic

Two traffic axes lead in a north-south direction along the edges of the Frickenhofer Höhe. The B 298 ( Schwäbisch Gmünd - Schwäbisch Hall) on the west side and the B 19 ( Aalen - Würzburg ) in the Kochertal on the east side.
The Obere Kochertal Railway ran from Gaildorf to Untergröningen from 1903 to 2005 as a
branch line .

Natural monuments

Teufelskanzel at the northern Spornabfall of Hohentannen near Rotenhar
Götzenloch, also called Hohler Stein , near Ruppertshofen

On the northern slope of the Hohentannen there is the Teufelskanzel at the top of a small blade. It is a layered cave with piers (partly in the shape of a pulpit) in the cave sandstone (Upper Stubensandstein ), which is located at the upper end of a blade in the area of a small source outlet. Harder sandstone banks form the “roof” and a waterfall step over which the small stream falls like a waterfall when there is heavy rainfall or after the snow has melted. This created these grotto-like cavities. Here, pillar-like pillars remained in the cave sandstone, whereby a pulpit-like structure was preserved, from which the name Devil's Pulpit is derived. It is easy to reach from the Hohetannen hiking car park on the road between Frickenhofen and Rotenhar.

The Götzenloch - often referred to as a hollow stone on maps - is an erosion cave. This lies in a side blade of the Götzenbachtal about 2.5 km east of Ruppertshofen . It is a small cave in the soft sandstones of the upper Stubensandstein. The cave was created by the fact that softer sandstones were eroded under a harder sandstone bank and the cave niche was formed. At the end of the cave, which is now around 4 m deep, a small spring rises, which is responsible for the creation of the cave. The Götzenloch is a few steps away from the green path cycle path "Around the Leintal and Frickenhofer Höhe" which leads from Ruppertshofen to the Götzenbach reservoir.

In the Nestelwald about one kilometer south of Sulzbach am Kocher, an impressive large floe slide is exposed , the demolition niche of which shows the upper areas of the lower colored marl . Light-colored sandstones of the silica sandstone are exposed , in which a channel filling with a width of 100 m and a height of 5 to 6 m is switched on. In the slope below the demolition wall, the lying of the silica sandstone can be seen. Here the Lehrberg layers as well as small parts of the Rote Wand (also Lower Colorful Marl) are exposed. In the embankment of the ravine above the road about 300 m to the southeast are sandstones of the reed sandstone , in the level of which this clod has slipped.

In the Kochertal between Untergröningen and Algishofen , where the Kocher cut into the Mittelkeuper, the hard rocks of the silica sandstone form high rock slopes or protrude as large rocks from the embankment or from the forest areas above the Kochertal. The mostly ungrown steep slopes and rock faces allow good insights into the structure and composition of these layers.

history

At the end of 1944, at the end of the Second World War , the Nazi construction team Organization Todt set up a large construction site on the level between Seifertshofen, Steinenbach, Helpertshofen and Kemnaten , with the aim of building a 2.5 km long concrete runway for jet fighters of the Messerschmitt Me 262 type to build. Around 600 workers, mostly prisoners of war , were deployed, barracks were built in the surrounding villages and wooded areas were cut down. Due to the advance of the US Army, construction work was canceled on April 18, 1945.

Attractions

Although the Frickenhofer Höhe only takes up a small area, there are a number of sights, some of which are unique:

Castle Church and Hohenstadt Castle
A special gem: the pleasure house in the Hohenstadt hedge garden
Hohenstadt Castle Church
One of the oldest hedge gardens in Europe: the Hohenstadt hedge garden

Hohenstadt Castle and Castle Church are located high above the Kocher Valley and architecturally form a unit.

The Hohenstadt Castle of the Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden family was given its current Baroque form around 1760 after two renovations in the 16th and 17th centuries. It has free-lying stairs with unusually flat steps on the floors, a special type of staircase that can otherwise only be found in the Würzburg Residence . The building is privately owned and can be viewed on a guided tour. The building served as a backdrop and location for the German film production " Der Rote Baron ".

The Hohenstadt Castle and Pilgrimage Church was built under Wilhelm Adelmann in just four years from 1707 to 1711. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in the "Vorarlberg Baroque".

The hedge garden of Graf Adelmann's Hohenstadt Castle is located a few steps north of the castle and is one of the oldest gardens of its kind in Europe. It was first mentioned in 1549. In 1756 a new structure was built in French style. The pleasure house in the garden, a two-story “garden house”, was built in 1760. The entire complex has been a listed building since 1982 and is open to the public.

Untergröningen Castle

The Castle Untergröningen , landmark Untergröningen, was considered the seat of Vito de Groningen mentioned in documents in 1102 and the 1108th In 1351 Johann von Rechberg was the owner. In 1410 the castle was sold to the Limpurg taverns . From 1777 to 1804 it was owned by the Hohenlohe-Bartenstein family . The Prince of Colloredo-Mansfeld sold the castle to the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1827 . The castle is still owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg.

From 1830 to the mid-1970s, the castle was used as a residential building with several apartments, as a rectory and at times as a school. After it had stood empty for many years, its refurbishment and renovation began in the late 1990s. The “Temporary Museum of Contemporary Art” of the KISS association (Art in Untergröningen Castle) and the exhibitions that take place in the summer months have made the castle famous far beyond the region.

The Swabian Farming and Technology Museum Seifertshofen in Eschach-Seifertshofen shows a loving hodgepodge of exhibits from agriculture, technology and militaria. Especially friends of tractor pulling should get their money's worth here. Once a year, runs for the German tractor pulling championship take place in Seifertshofen. The Lanz Bulldog Steam Festival, which takes place once a year, is also particularly worth seeing.

There are several water towers on the Frickenhofer Höhe - these include those in or near: Eschach , Eschach- Batschenhof , Frickenhofen , Göggingen , Abtsgmünd- Hohenstadt , Eschach- Holzhausen , Ruppertshofen , Schechingen and Seifertshofen .

leisure

The Franconian-Swabian Way of St. James leads from Würzburg via Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Ulm on the Danube. The Abtsgmünd-Wöllstein-Böbingen section leads over the Frickenhofer Höhe.

Below the Hohentannen, on the road from Rotenhar to Schönberg (Gaildorf) was the further away special kind of set up a forest experience. This is a combination of art and reflection. At the 10 stations along the way, you are encouraged to think about the central questions of life.

The Idyllic Road is a holiday route that leads through the Swabian-Franconian Forest . The section Sulzbach-Laufen-Untergröningen-Eschach-Gschwend runs over the Frickenhofer Höhe. For 10 years, a signposted cycle path has led Idyllische Strasse , away from the roads, through the Swabian-Franconian Forest and over the Frickenhofer Höhe.

The Green Path cycle path  - around the Leintal and Frickenhofer Höhe - has existed since 2004 . It can be divided into six circuits, which are selected in such a way that intermediate stops can be made again and again. Around 50 information boards are set up along the green path. The central starting point is Ruppertshofen at the Ostalb vocational training center or at the sports field.

The Kocher-Jagst cycle path follows the twin rivers Kocher and Jagst . Along the Kocher from Aalen via Schwäbisch Hall to Bad Friedrichshall and along the Jagst via Möckmühl, Langenburg, Crailsheim, Ellwangen back to Aalen. The two rivers are only a few kilometers apart. The Kocher-Jagst cycle path is one of the most popular cycle routes in Germany.

From the Hagbergturm , which stands east-southeast of Gschwend- Horlachen in the neighboring Welzheimer Forest , as well as from the Altenbergturm , which stands east of Hohenberg (hamlet in the municipal area of Sulzbach-Laufen ) in the Limpurg Mountains , you can enjoy the view of the Frickenhofer Höhe, among other things.

Camping / tent sites are located at the Götzenbach and Rehnenmühlen reservoirs.
