The Federbach is a nearly 6 km long, altogether roughly south-flowing brook in the Ostalbkreis in eastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the lower Lein from the left near the hamlet of Horn in the municipality of Göggingen .
geography
course
The Federbach rises at an altitude of about 501 m above sea level. NHN on the eastern Frickenhofer Höhe about one kilometer southwest of the center of Obergröningen in the ditch of a dirt road north of the Gröninger Loh forest to the west -south -west. Its source is at the southwestern foot of the Galgenberg ( 517.2 m above sea level ) between the fields and meadows of the Breitang corridor .
It initially flows, accompanied by the field path, about half a kilometer between the fields and meadows of the Aalbach corridor until it then reaches a valley basin running south. Its longer upper valley begins in the Höhenäcker a few hundred meters west of the newer part of the settlement of Obergröningen, in it begins at a piece of forest south of the L 1080 running to the hamlet of Holzhausen in the neighboring municipality of Eschach , the ditch that drains this, which then extends a little north in front of the Langholz of the Zeirenhof of Eschach combined with the former. Both upper branches are unstable.
Past Zeirenhof, the Federbach flows through a strip of forest to the south and now marks the municipal boundary between Schechingen and Eschach for a while. A little south of the Zeirenhof, the brook crosses under the county road 3259 , which connects Holzhausen with Schechingen , then deepens into the plateau on a south-south-eastern course, initially through the forest, and runs westwards first under a group of old burial mounds and then under a Jewish cemetery. Again in the open corridor, the Haftenbrunnenbach flows into the first major tributary from the west. At about 448 m above sea level. NHN crosses the K 3260 the Federbach, which leads from Göggingen in the southwest to Schechingen in the northeast, which is immediately followed by the Haldenbach from the village above the side valley cut at Haghof, which belongs to Schechingen . With a length of 2.1 km and a partial catchment area of approx. 2.7 km², this is the largest of all the tributaries of the Federbach. Between the two secondary streams, Scherrenbach from the right and Hofbach from the left, the valley is forested again from the bank to the upper slopes.
After the inflow of the left Schelmenbach , the Federbach flows into the 2.5 hectare large flood retention basin Federbach . The small Horner Bach flows into the retention basin from the east . The Federbach and a relief channel then leave the small reservoir and then reunite about 200 m downstream in the Lange Wiese corridor .
The Federbach then runs a short stretch south past the Gögginger hamlet of Horn on the left spur of the valley. At the edge of the Leintal, it crosses under the L 1075, which follows the river and leads from Leinzell past Horn to Heuchlingen, and finally flows out at 390 m above sea level. NHN just below the Mühle farm , which also belongs to Göggingen , often also called Horner Mühle on maps , in the lower Lein .
The 5.8 km long Federbachlauf with a mean slope of about 19 ‰ ends about 111 meters below its origin on the Lein.
Catchment area
The Federbach has a catchment area of 10.2 km², the upper quarter of which is naturally part of the lower area of Frickenhofer Höhe , the remainder of the lower area Liasplatten above Rems and Lein of the foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb . The highest point is on the northern edge at 509 m above sea level. NHN west of Obergröningen on the Kirchenwäldle .
Beyond that borders the catchment area of the Kocher tributary Suhbach . The Streitbach , which also flows to the Kocher, has its source on the north-northeastern edge near Obergröningen . The other competitors all drain to the Lein , first in the northeast of the upper reaches of the Sulzbach of the Spatzenbach which flows into this near Neubronn , in the east of the Siechenbach and in the southeast an insignificant slope stream. In the area behind the western watershed, two insignificant sloping streams in the southwest and mostly the Götzenbach drain to the Lein, on the longest part the large left-hand Götzenbach tributary Büttenbach collects it .
The Federbach rises in the municipality of Schechingen , which later is the left neighbor of their area for a long time and separates it on the upper reaches from that of the municipality of Eschach , then from that of the municipality of Göggingen , which it finally also flows through. The municipality of Obergröningen in the northeast also has a small share of the catchment area .
The largest part of the catchment area lies on the largely open and plowed Black Jura plateaus on both sides of the predominantly wooded valley.
There are only two small towns in Schechingen directly on the brook, the Zeirenhof farm in the not yet deepened valley and the Haghof hamlet on the middle course.
The Gögginger hamlet Horn sits on the left, eastern valley spur to the Lein. The largest place in the catchment area is the village of Schechingen, which lies at the beginning of the valley crack of its left tributary Haldenbach on the plateau, has grown together with the hamlet of Sebastiansweiler and has almost reached the Haldenhaus residential area in Haldenbachtal. In addition, only a small corner of the village of Göggingen on the right plateau and the village of Obergröningen on the north protrude into the catchment area.

Federbach flood retention basin
The lower reaches of the spring brook runs through the hamlet and the Gögginger Horn Federbachsee or spring creek reservoir called detention basin Federbach that by 1981 or 1982 Wasserverband Kocher-Lein was built. Behind a 25 m or 26 m high earth dam, 70,000 m³ or 78,000 m³ are permanently dammed on an area of 2.5 ha. In the event of flooding the retention volume can rise to 850,000 m³ or 1,000,000 m³, the lake then covers 14 ha Catchment area covers 9.6 km² or 9.8 km².
geology
The catchment area of the Federbach comprises plateaus in the Black Jura and a valley floor in the Black Jura, but mostly in the Keuper .
The brook has its source in the Obtususton formation , on the northeastern edge of the catchment area on the Galgenberg hill near Obergröningen is the higher Numismalis marl formation . On both sides of the east-facing upper course and on the following southern course on the left slope, the Arietenkalk formation strikes out, while the stream itself on this section soon runs in the Angulatenton and then the Psilonotenton formation . In the valley forest between Zeirenhof and Haghof it changes to the top layer of marl ( Trossingen formation ) of the Keuper. Shortly after the tributary of the Haftenbrunnenbach brook, the bed and then the entire valley floor up to the mouth in the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein formation ) lie .
At the top of the southern catchment area, probably due to the large-scale layer falling to the south-southeast, on the heights to the left and right around Schechingen and Göggingen above the Numismalis marl, there is also the Amaltheenton formation of the Black Jurassic, which is higher in the deposition sequence. At the heights on both sides of the central reaches, in addition to these Mesozoic rocks, there are extensive loess-bearing floating earths from more recent geological times, while large areas near the watershed are covered by loess sediment from Quaternary deposits.
A short fault line runs from west to east on the right slope of the lower Haftenbrunnenbach valley to the edge of the Federbach valley, it displaces the Obtususton on the southern deep floe compared to the Psilonoten or Angulatenton on the northern high floe.
Nature and protected areas
The Federbach is a very natural brook from around the Zeirenhof. From there it meanders through a wooded valley until it reaches the Federbachsee. On the bank there are many spruces in the forest between Zeirenhof and Haghof, but overall the alder trees predominate along the course, which initially has a 1-2, later a 1-3 meter wide bed. At the run, breastfeeding areas alternate with stone benches, at the end of which he quickly falls. The tributaries are up to a meter wide, and water from stratified springs sometimes trickles into them. After the reservoir, the stream runs straight and is usually accompanied by a tree gallery.
Field hedges are especially found at the bend in the upper slope.
In the woods below the Zeirenhofs which begins the conservation area Welzheimer forest with Leintal until the Leintal down one of the up to the upper slope buckling up most of the following valley, except only settlements in Haghof, horn and a small piece of terrain around the clubhouse Horner hut opposite the eponymous hamlet on the right slope.
