parents

Hansjörg Dongus was the son of the teacher Robert Walther Dongus from Leonberg and Dora born. Farmer from Öhringen. In 1944, his father was the head of the SS Race and Settlement Office in Prague.

Professional background

After training as a primary school teacher and four years as a teacher in Reutlingen, Hansjörg Dongus studied geography , geology , philosophy and education at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen from 1953 to 1957 , with Friedrich Huttenlocher , Georg Wagner , Hölder and Eugen Seibold . He received his doctorate in 1957 and was then assistant at the Geography Institute in Tübingen until his habilitation in 1964. After a substitute professorship at the University of Stuttgart , he was Scientific Counselor and Associate Professor at the Saarland University from 1965 to 1968 . From 1968 until his retirement in 1994 he held a chair for physical geography at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Work areas

In his active time, Dongus represented practically the entire field of physical geography in research and teaching, but also came into contact with cultural and anthropogeography during his training. His main focus was the geomorphology, especially of the southern German layer level country and the Alps . In his teaching and his publications, he attached particular importance to a clear presentation supported by maps. Among other things, he was involved in the Geographical Land Survey 1: 200,000 (natural division of Germany) with five map sheets . With his conviction that the relief is not only climatically determined, but also tectonically and structurally determined, he came in opposition to Julius Büdel in a fundamental dispute in German geomorphology that had been going on for decades.
