Peter Copley

Peter Copley (born May 20, 1915 in Bushey , Hertfordshire , England , † October 7, 2008 in Bristol ) was a British actor .

Life

Copley studied acting at the Old Vic Theater in London and made his stage debut there in 1932 in William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale . He made his first appearance in London's West End three years later . In 1934 he made his feature film debut, two years later he was on a theater tour of South America and in 1939 he had an engagement at the Gate Theater in Dublin . During the Second World War he served in the British armed forces between 1940 and 1941. After the war he played continuously with the Old Vic Company until 1950 . Copley was a member of the British Communist Party in the 1940s and early 1950s . He studied in addition to his acting profession jurisprudence and in 1963 to the Bar Association of the Middle Temple called, but never practiced.

Copley has appeared in well over 100 television roles on British television, including many guest appearances on television series such as Secret Mission for John Drake , Department S , Doctor Who , With Umbrella, Charm and Bowler Hat and Five Friends . He is best known to German-speaking audiences for his role as Reverend Muldaur in the British TV film Der kleine Lord with Alec Guinness and Ricky Schroder in the leading roles, which is repeated every year at Christmas time. His film appearances include the Beatles comedy Hi-Hi-Hilfe! by Richard Lester , Steven Spielberg's The Kingdom of the Sun , Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven and Roman Polański's Oliver Twist . His last appearance was in the fantasy film The Color of Magic by and with Terry Pratchett . He was also repeatedly seen in major theater productions such as Richard II and Hamlet , and even in old age he still appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company .

Copley was married three times; between 1941 and 1959 with the actress Pamela Brown , then with Ninka Dolega and from 1967 until his death with Margaret Tabor. From this marriage a daughter was born.
