Agatha Christie's Poirot is a British crime - television series . David Suchet played the leading role as Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot from 1989 to the end of the series in 2013 .
General
Originally produced by London Weekend Television (LWT), the series has been produced by Granada Television , which acquired LWT in 1994, since the 2000s .
Agatha Christie's Poirot began as a television series in 1989 on the British television network ITV1 . Initially, the series consisted mainly of 50-minute episodes, for which mostly Poirot short stories were reworked. Season 2 started with The House on the Cliff (based on The House on the Dune ), a 100-minute double episode. The first real special was a review of Poirot's first case in England during his exile, which was made necessary by the outbreak of World War I , between the 2nd and 3rd seasons with A Family Under Suspicion (based on The Missing Link in the Chain ). The fourth season consisted exclusively of three 100-minute double episodes; from the 6th season (1995) only 100-minute films were produced.
From the 7th season (shooting: 1999, broadcast: 2000) the structure of the series was changed significantly. The recurring characters Captain Hastings, Chief Inspector Japp and Miss Lemon were written into the adaptations, although they did not appear in the book templates. From the 9th season, the heavily changed production design and the elimination of the three recurring characters Captain Hastings, Chief Inspector Japp and Miss Lemon, most of whom do not appear in the book templates, are particularly noticeable. The book models show an aging, gloomy Poirot character; this was also taken into account for the scripts and the atmosphere from season 9 onwards.
David Suchet agreed to be available for all unfilmed Poirot episodes. In early November 2011 ITV finally confirmed that a thirteenth season would go into production in 2012 and that the series would conclude with the five remaining Poirot stories. With Elephants Can Remember (based on Elephants Don't Forget ) the 13th and final season of the series started on June 9, 2013 on British television and ended on November 13 of the same year with the 70th and final episode of the series, Curtain: Poirot's Last Case (based on curtain ).
Set design and years
Unlike Agatha Christie's novels and short stories, which appeared between 1920 and 1975 and set between 1916 and 1972, the series was set entirely around 1936. (With the exception of the special A Family is under suspicion , which also takes place in the series in 1917, the episode Die Pralinenkachel, which predominantly takes place before the First World War, and individual flashback scenes.) The series therefore has a 1930s set design throughout and contemporary historical elements, such as real historical newspaper articles and film recordings.
After Poirot had actually already withdrawn from active investigations in the country at the beginning of the episode The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Alibi, Ep. 7/1), he visits his former office in London in the Whitehaven Mansions apartment building during the course of the film that still belongs to him. From the next episode Lord Edgware dies (Thirteen at the table, Ep. 7/2) he takes up investigative activities with Miss Lemon and Captain Hastings again from here.
Prizes and awards
In 1990 the first season of the series received the British Academy Television Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in four categories . The awards went to music, make-up, costumes and opening credits.
Broadcast on German-speaking television
The first ten episodes had their German first broadcast on March 27, 1990 in the DFF ; In the credits, the predecessor television of the GDR is named as the client of the dubbed version. The third programs of the ARD and the then new station VOX broadcast further episodes. In 2005, NDR television and a few other third-party programs broadcast three episodes of season 9. From December 27, 2017, One will broadcast the episodes not previously broadcast and all others in HD and two-channel sound . ORF III has been broadcasting all episodes since July 11, 2019 .
