Christopher Gunning
Christopher Gunning , [ ˈkrɪsˌtʰəfə ˈɡʌnɪŋ ] (born August 5, 1944 in Cheltenham , Gloucestershire , England ) is a British composer of orchestral and chamber music as well as music for feature, television and documentary films.
Live and act
Christopher Gunning studied musicology at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama , where his tutors included Edmund Rubbra and Richard Rodney Bennett .
After graduating, he worked as an arranger for Mel Tormé , Shirley Bassey , The Hollies , Colin Blunstone and Phil Woods . Gunning wrote the string arrangement in Blunstone's 1972 hit Say You Don't Mind . Gunning composed the music for almost all of Poirot's films starring David Suchet , as well as the soundtrack for the three seasons of the British television program Rosemary & Thyme starring Pamela Ferris and starring Felicity Kendal.
In addition to chamber music, he has composed six symphonies, four concertos for solo instrument and orchestra and other orchestral pieces, e.g. B. a concerto for saxophone and orchestra and The Lobster , which have been performed in several concert halls in Europe - including London's Southbank Center . The saxophone concerto was recorded by John Harle and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and published by Sanctuary Classics . The Lobster appeared on the British record label Meridian Records, a piano concerto , the symphony No. 1 and the storm (in the original: Storm ) are distributed by Albany Records. Other orchestral works include concertos for oboe and clarinet and the 3rd and 4th symphonies, which the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra recorded together with the concert for oboe and string orchestra under the Chandos Records label . The 5th symphony was recorded under his musical direction by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra .
Awards
Gunnings' compositions for film and television have received several awards. In 2008 he received the BAFTA award for the best score for the film La vie en rose , three other awards for the soundtrack of the television programs Agatha Christie's Poirot and Porterhouse Blue and the film adaptation of the novel Middlemarch . His awards include three Ivor Novello Awards , which he received for his music for the television miniseries Rebecca based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier , the thriller Under Suspicion and the film drama Hidden Fire .
Gunning soundtracks for British films and BBC - Documentaries The Big Battalions , Wild Africa , Cold Lazarus and When the Whales Came were for other BAFTA Awards and Ivor Novello Awards nominated. His music for the Martini advertising campaign , which was heard around the world for thirty years, won three Clio awards.
