action

The action begins in London in 1835 . The aristocratic Charles Godwin is married to Amy, who is bedridden due to a riding accident and has a permanent coma, unresponsive. In order to get an heir, Charles pays the destitute Swiss Elisabeth Laurier to have a child with him and to give it to the Godwins, who officially adopt it as a foundling.

However, Elisabeth cannot forget her daughter. After seven years she succeeds in locating her daughter Louisa and is employed by the Godwins as a tutor for her. Without being allowed to identify herself as her mother, she makes friends with the initially closed and negative Louisa with educational skill and empathy and teaches her to read. Over time, a secret love affair develops between Elisabeth and Charles. Charles's father, Lord Clare, a bon vivant, first vies for Elisabeth, but leaves when he is confirmed the relationship between Elisabeth and his son. It is revealed that Lord Clare has so indebted the property that the property must be sold.

Charles, who is deeply affected by his wife's suffering, manages to actively euthanize by secretly exposing Amy to bed at night and exposing her to the winter cold in her unheated bedroom. With her death, Charles does not unselfishly clear the way to an open relationship with Elisabeth. Amy's sister Constance, who has been helping her brother-in-law Charles with housekeeping for years, is now hoping that Charles will marry her. However, he leaves the property that his father owes and drives into a new future with Elisabeth and Louisa.
