occupation

La vie en rose (Original title: La Môme ) is a French drama film directed by Olivier Dahan . The film depicts the life of Édith Piafs and was the opening film of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival on February 8, 2007.

The main role was played by Marion Cotillard , who was widely acclaimed by the press for her portrayal and received an Oscar . She embodies Piaf both as an 18-year-old street singer and as a mentally and physically destroyed woman shortly before her death in 1963.

action

The film depicts the life of the French chanson singer Édith Piaf in episodes . It begins in 1959 when Piaf collapses on stage at a concert in New York. From this point of departure, her life story is told in flashbacks: the childhood in which she grew up in her grandmother's brothel and developed a close emotional bond with the prostitute Titine, later traveling with her father Louis as a showman. At the age of 15 Edith left her father and went to Paris. Here she meets Simone Berteaut , who remains her most loyal friend until death.

In 1935 Edith was invited to an audition by the theater owner Louis Leplée after hearing her sing on a street corner. Leplée invents her stage name with Piaf (sparrow) and gives her contacts in the Parisian music scene. Piaf is later suspected of participating in Leplée's murder.

In the years that followed, Piaf developed into the extraordinary and eccentric artist she later became known as. She experienced a deep blow after the death of her friend Marcel Cerdan in 1949.

The film particularly highlights the singer's darker side, such as her drug addiction, her serious illnesses and the associated breakdowns that occur again and again. The biography follows Piaf's work in leaps and bounds up to her death on October 10, 1963.

Soundtrack

In the film La vie en rose a total of 30 chansons by Édith Piaf are recorded. Some of them, such as Milord , La vie en rose and Non, je ne regrette rien , were used as originals, but digitally remastered. Another part, for example Mon légionnaire , was re-recorded by professional singers.

Data

Filming began in early 2006 with a budget of 20.7 million euros. The film opened in France and the French-speaking parts of Belgium and Switzerland on February 14, 2007. The cinema release in Germany was on February 22nd, in the USA on June 6th, 2007. La vie en rose reached 4.8 million admissions in France. The film grossed around 86.3 million US dollars worldwide.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : The film jumps back and forth between times in a dramatically bumpy manner, loses sight of people and leaves neither the images nor the stories room to unfold. Only the great leading actress and the unforgettable chansons lift the film out of the patchwork monotony and let a myth rise for a few touching moments.
  • Kino.de: A magnificent, moving portrait with strong performances in front of and behind the camera.
  • MovieGod.de: La vie en rose presents itself as an ambitious and well-equipped homage to a beloved national heroine , without glorifying her or glossing over the overall picture. Well played and beautifully executed, the film touches and entertains in equal measure, not least thanks to Édith Piaf's great music.
