Ilan Goldman (* 1961 in Paris as Alain Goldman ) is a French - Israeli film producer .

Life

Alain Goldman's grandfather and father were already active in the film industry. The grandfather was the general agent for Universal Studios in France in the 1930s . His father was the general manager of United International Pictures in France. Some family members were among the victims of the mass arrest of Jews by the Vichy regime police in July 1942 . His parents escaped it. His father had ties to the Resistance and was warned in good time. His mother's family had fled to Pau before the German troops marched in.

At the age of 12 he read the accounts of Primo Levi . He joined the Bétar , a right-wing Jewish movement, "less for ideological reasons, but because I was full of anger, determined to show it to anyone who had something against the Jews." At the age of 18, he decided to follow suit To emigrate to Israel. There he completed his studies and met his partner Roselyne Bosch , a Christian. When asked to do so by the Israeli immigration authorities, he took the first name Ilan. He kept this name when he returned to Europe.

Together with Roselyne Bosch, Ilan Goldman has two children.

Professional career

After returning to France, he trained as an assistant with Jean Frydman , the founder of Europe 1 , and then with Marin Karmitz . It was through the latter that he got to know European auteur cinema. His partner Roselyne Bosch was working as a reporter for the weekly Le Point at the time .

In 1992 he funded his first film, 1492 Conquest of Paradise , directed by Ridley Scott . Roselyne Bosch wrote the script for it. According to his own words, this film is characteristic of his self-image and his goals as a producer: the symbiosis of American and French cinema seek to draw on the full resources in terms of resources, but use them for the benefit of the plot instead of the mere effect. He could only get involved in films, so Goldman, the subject of which touches him emotionally: “You are the first to use your money and the last to possibly make a profit. It is impossible for me to produce if I don't feel any force that moves me, no topic that arouses my passion. "

In 1995 he participated as a European co-producer in the film Casino , directed by Martin Scorsese . In 2000, he involuntarily contributed to refuting a seemingly firmly established doctrine: for a film to be internationally successful, according to the prevailing opinion, it must be made in English. Vatel, however, produced in English together with Roland Joffé and under his direction, turned out to be a flop. The French film Les Rivières Pourpres, on the other hand, enjoyed worldwide success after a ten-minute clip was shown at the Cannes Festival .

La vie en rose , the filmed biography of Édith Piaf , became a global success in 2007 - according to his own words, contrary to the prophecies of doom of the distributors: “Piaf, that's old! Nobody cares! The young people won't come! Biographies don't work! ”His choice of the lesser-known Marion Cotillard as leading actress also ledto fearsin the Disney studios that the film would not develop any traction. More than 11 million viewers in the cinemas and the award of Marion Cotillards with the 2008 Oscar for best actress ultimately proved him right.
