action

In Montanists - Monastery Labaudieu in Lorraine , near the German border, a new proposed monk in room No. XIII (13) for a nail to be. Crucifix into the wall. Since this room should never actually be given to residents, a leading priest is brought in. When he enters the room, the young monk kneels praying in front of the crucifix and blood runs from the wall. Inspector Niémans finds out that the blood came from a person walled in the wall.

The policeman Reda is also embroiled in a strange incident: he is driving with colleagues in the car when a man dressed like Jesus walks in front of the car. Although he is badly injured, he escapes and drags himself in front of the steps of a church , where he collapses unconscious. Here Reda notices that the man was shot and has him taken to the hospital.

When Reda later wants to visit the man who ran in front of the car in the hospital , he can just prevent another attempt to kill him. The perpetrator flees from Reda - the persecution causes Reda to doubt his sanity, as the perpetrator, whose face cannot be seen under the monk's robe, apparently has superhuman strength and gunshots and high walls cannot stop him.

In the meantime, Commissioner Niémans' investigation leads to the Maginot Line and a body is also found there. In the hospital, Reda meets his former trainer Niémans and they both notice that they are working on the same case. Both are supported by the religious scholar Marie. She recognizes the confused stories of the man who walked in front of the car as the Revelation of John and explains to them that the Montanists believe that the day of the Apocalypse will be exactly 730,730 days after the day of Jesus' death, which was on April 7, 30 AD . Chr. Should have been, would come.

A photo appears showing the Last Supper , and some of the people on it are recognized as people who have already been murdered. The team goes to find the rest of the people in the photo, but they're always late. A customs officer was murdered and crucified with nails. Four more corpses are found at a lake, the mysterious monks reappear and cannot be stopped.

In the course of research, they soon come across the legend of a book that everything is supposed to revolve around. This book is part of a treasure stolen from the Vatican centuries ago . During a search of the monastery they come across Heinrich von Garten, whom they cannot prosecute due to his diplomatic immunity . It turns out that Garten is the leader of a secret society . He was an officer in the German Wehrmacht and discovered a secret passage shortly before the end of the Second World War , but was unable to examine it more closely due to the defeat of the German Reich , but continued to research. Decades after the war he bought the monastery and founded his secret society with the "black monks" there.

The “12 apostles” from the photo managed to uncover secrets about the treasure and the book, so they had to die. Garten wants to build a new Europe with the knowledge of the apocalypse and the treasure of the Vatican.

On the day of the supposed apocalypse, Niémans and Reda find hidden access to the Maginot Line through the tower of the monastery. At the same time, Garten and his secret society are on their way to the hiding place of the book in the corridors of the Maginot Line.

The two policemen enter a chamber deep underground. There you will find the robes of the monks, as well as black hoods and camouflage paint, which explains why they could never see a face. Next is a box with ampoules of an amphetamine that was once developed by the Nazis - if you ingest this substance, your strengths multiply, you have faster reflexes, feel no pain and obey unconditionally. That explains the seemingly superhuman strength of the "black monks". Reda and Niémans both insert an ampoule. But their penetration does not go unnoticed and they are overwhelmed by a gas. When they came to, Heinrich von Garten greeted them in the temple of Lothar II.

Tied up they have to watch as the former officer Garten sets an ancient mechanism in motion with the key, which reveals the book. Niémans is still connected by radio to Marie, who is sitting in the hospital with the man who was shot. She soon realizes that the book must be protected by a protective mechanism. Niémans wants to warn Garten, but he only has eyes for the book and when he picks it up, he triggers a mechanism that floods the entire underground labyrinth. Niémans and Reda manage to free themselves from the shackles and escape from the chamber, while Garten shoots himself and his helpers drown. The two flee through the corridors of the bunker and manage to save themselves just in time.

In the end, Niémans and Reda visit the victim in the hospital with Marie. He is on the mend and is therefore the only survivor of the "12 Apostles".

Reviews

"Continuation of the successful film adaptation of the novel" Die purple rivers "(2000), which surpasses the first part in speed, action and superficial effects, but which lacks content-related coherence and religious and political credibility."

“The attempt here was made to match the gloomy atmosphere of its successful predecessor: brutal murders, sinister images and tough investigators. But the first film penetrated the abysses of human souls in an extremely gripping manner, so all that remains is an absurd story about a doomsday cult, logical breaks and a series of discrepancies that soon become more annoying than creepy entertaining.
