Roland Joffé (born November 17, 1945 in London , England ) is a French - British director and producer .

Life

Joffé's grandfather is the well-known sculptor and draftsman Jacob Epstein . Joffé studied English and Dramaturgy in Manchester . After completing his studies, he founded the “Young Vic Theater” with other theater-loving fellow students. Then he went to Laurence Olivier at the "Britain's National Theater", where he founded the touring company "The Mobile". At the Old Vic Theater he directed the classic tragedy The Bacchae based on Euripides .

During this time, Joffé also began working for television. He initially worked for local news broadcasts and eventually directed six episodes of the hit series Coronation Street and staged the 13 episodes of The Stars Look Down series based on Archibald Joseph Cronin's bestseller . His TV films The Spongers (1978) and United Kingdom (1981) won television awards.

His first work as a film director was the war drama The Killing Fields from 1984. The film was showered with awards, including three Oscars . Joffé received an Oscar nomination for best director. The 1986 historical film The Mission with Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons won the Palme d'Or in Cannes and Joffé received the second Oscar nomination for best director in Hollywood. In Die Schattenmacher with Paul Newman from 1989 he addressed the development of the atomic bomb . His fourth film was City of Joy, with Patrick Swayze , which he produced and directed at the same time.

In 1995 the film The Scarlet Letter followed , a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Nathaniel Hawthorne , with Robert Duvall in the lead role.

Joffé is a partner in the production companies "Lightmotive", which financed the Super Mario Bros. flop in 1993 , and "Nomad Productions". In 2000 he shot the historical epic Vatel about the French chef François Vatel with Gérard Depardieu in the title role and Uma Thurman and Tim Roth in supporting roles.

His thriller Captivity caught the attention of its aggressive marketing campaign in 2007, but it became a financial failure and failed to meet with criticism.

The daughter Nathalie Lunghi , who also works as an actress, comes from a relationship with the actress Cherie Lunghi . As a founding member of the “Cambodia Trust”, he is committed to the development of the health and education system in Cambodia . He is also a member of the Survival International Association , which strives to protect the indigenous population in numerous countries.

Joffé was working on a film about Josemaría Escrivá , the founder of Opus Dei, which was released in early 2011 under the title There Be Dragons . Further productions for film and television followed.
