Patrick Swayze's mother, ballet trainer Patsy (1927–2013), was a sought-after choreographer in Hollywood. She worked z. B. for the films Urban Cowboy , Thelma & Louise and One Last Dance . His father Jesse Wayne (1925–1982), a former rodeo cowboy, died after a heart attack. In addition to the actor Don, Swayze has another brother and sister who died in 1994. Another adopted sister can be seen in One Last Dance .

Swayze trained to dance as a child. During his high school years, he was a running back on a football team. A severe knee injury forced him to stop playing football. After two years at San Jacinto College , Swayze moved to New York City and trained as a ballet dancer at the Joffrey and Harkness Ballet School. For a while he was a member of the Eliot Feld ballet.

Progressive signs of wear and tear in the injured knee prompted him to increasingly turn to the film business. From 1979 he played leading and supporting roles in film and television productions such as the television series The Renegades and the feature film The Outsiders (both 1983). He became known to a larger audience in 1984 in the action film The Red Tide by John Milius . The literary film adaptation of Torches in the Storm based on the novels The Heirs of Cain and Love and War by the writer John Jakes became a worldwide success . In the twelve-part miniseries Swayze played the plantation owners Orry Main , one of the two lead roles in addition to that of James Read embodied George Hazard . Swayze had a close friendship with James Read at times.

In 1987 the film Dirty Dancing followed , which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Before starring in the hugely successful dance film, few fans knew that Swayze was an excellent dancer. In addition to his work as an actor, he also worked as a singer for the film. For the soundtrack for the film he contributed the title She's Like the Wind , which was able to place in the charts worldwide.

Swayze received his second Golden Globe nomination for best actor in 1990 for his portrayal of Sam Wheat alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Demi Moore in Jerry Zucker's tragic comedy Ghost - Message from Sam . The surfer thriller Dangerous Surf by director Kathryn Bigelow with Swayze as an opponent of Keanu Reeves from 1991 was another worldwide box office success. Another Golden Globe nomination earned him the role of drag queen in To Wong Foo, thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar in 1995.

After his father's death in 1982, Swayze struggled with alcohol problems . After his sister committed suicide in 1994 , he decided to go into rehab . After a three-year hiatus from the film business, Patrick Swayze returned to the big screen in Black Dog in 1998 as trucker Jack Crews . After that he was mostly only seen in supporting roles and independent productions such as Donnie Darko (2001), Waking Up in Reno (2002) and 11:14 (2003).

In January 2008, doctors diagnosed Swayze with pancreatic cancer shortly after he starred in the television series The Beast . Swayze succumbed to cancer on September 14, 2009 at the age of 57.

Swayze was married to actress Lisa Niemi since June 12, 1975 , with whom he last lived on a ranch in New Mexico .
