The Kidnapper (video and television title Kidnapper ) is an American film directed by Darrell Roodt from 1993. Patrick Swayze played the leading role.

The petty crook Jack Charles is suddenly confronted with his daughter Kelly, who has escaped from the children's home. She told him about bad conditions in the children's home: Children were beaten for every little thing and even handcuffed. Jack kidnaps his son when he is about to be transferred to the children's home and escapes with both children. He is now wanted by the police as a kidnapper .

An article with a photo of him appears in the newspaper, in which he is portrayed as a felon. Jack angrily calls Los Angeles- based reporter Kathleen Mercer, who wrote the article. He asks her to clarify the article and is also of the opinion that he only saved his own children from intolerable conditions in the children's home. The reporter explains to him that she has been tracking down the director of the children's home for a long time and that she wanted to publicize the situation in the home. As a reporter, however, she is not allowed to interview minors and therefore needs help from Jack: He should ask his children about the conditions in the home and provide them with information ...

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on August 27, 1993 that the film was awesome. He particularly praised Halle Berry , who is potentially one of the “hottest” actresses in Hollywood (“Berry is potentially one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood right now”), and Diane Ladd . He criticized the portrayal of Patrick Swayze .

James Berardinelli described the film as a "mistake". The presentation by Patrick Swayze he found in according to his work City of Joy ( City of Joy disappointing). Berardinelli praised Sabrina Lloyd .

Rita Kempley characterized the film in the Washington Post on August 27, 1993 as a drama that aims to be a comedy .
