characters
- The African-American Mavis Rae ( Whoopi Goldberg ) was a member of the female vocal trio The Ebony Blackbirds in the 1980s - a group that quickly disappeared from the scene after their single hit Don't Hide Love . Mavis invested the money she earned at the time in the small La Mont Hotel in New York and thus makes a living. She is a chain smoker and - since smoking is forbidden in the hotel - can be found outside the back exit of her hotel, where she talks to the café owner from the next building about her current problems. As a young woman, Mavis demonstrated for the rights of black Americans and is now close to the Democrats. She is irritable and prone to sarcasm - her comments on George W. Bush and his politics are accordingly .
- Nasim ( Omid Djalili ), the craftsman of La Mont is Iranian and fled from the political situation in his homeland. Because of his bad experience, he is anxious not to attract the authorities' attention. Often mistaken for an Arab, Nasim fears that one day he will be arrested as a terrorist.
- Mavis' brother Courtney Rae (Wren T. Brown) is a lawyer and had a very well-paying job at Enron . After its spectacular bankruptcy, he not only lost his job, but also a large part of his fortune, which was in the company's shares. Since his savings have been used up in the pilot episode and he can no longer keep his apartment, he moves in with his sister. Unlike her, he is an avid Republican supporter. In other respects, too, the rational and level-headed Courtney forms the opposite pole to Mavis.
- Courtney's girlfriend Rita (Elizabeth Regen) works as a radiologist. Although she is not an African American, but a white woman, she poses as a fighter for their rights. Unlike Courtney, Mavis is not convinced that this commitment is based on a genuine interest in oppressed minorities. She is also of the opinion that the not overly intelligent Rita is not the right one for her academically educated brother in the long run.
- Other regular characters are Jadwiga (Gordana Rashovich), La Mont's cleaning lady, who immigrated from Poland , and Mavis' friends, with whom she meets for poker once a week.

Background information
The series was discontinued in the US after 22 episodes in April 2004. According to the television dictionary, the reason for this is the declining ratings during the first season. Other reasons could have been the obvious anti-Bush attitude and the socially critical issues such as xenophobia, SARS , racial discrimination, same-sex marriages, etc.
Awards
The series received an Emmy nomination for Best Equipment in 2004 . Whoopi Goldberg was nominated for the Image Award that same year .
