Swayze originally wrote the song together with film and television composer Stacy Widelitz for the 1984 film Grandview, USA . However, it was not used in this film. During the production of the film Dirty Dancing , Swayze played the song to the producers, who then adopted it for the soundtrack . The song was recorded in November 1986; the publication took place in December 1987.

The music video for She's Like the Wind was shot in black and white. It shows original excerpts from the film Dirty Dancing . In addition, scenes by Patrick Swayze and Wendy Fraser are shown. The video is also on the DVD accompanying the film.

The song became a huge hit, as did the movie. She's Like the Wind reached number 3 on the US charts and the top 10 in many other countries.
In the film (500) Days of Summer from 2009, the character Tom tells of the fact that he hears this song every time he looks at or thinks of his colleague Summer.
