Psychological and physical torture followed, including forcing Jennifer to drink a cocktail of eyes and blood. When trying to escape, she discovers that she doesn't seem to be the only victim. Gary is also held captive in an adjoining room. They then try to find out why they are being held and grow closer. They try to escape together. Gary is almost able to hit the tormentor.

Soon the viewer learns that Gary is not really trapped, but is playing his role as a prisoner. He and his brother Ben, who is monitoring the prisoners on a screen in another part of the house, are the perpetrators. Gary is an admirer of Jennifer Tree and seeks her closeness and trust. After a brief exchange of words, Gary stabs his brother Ben with a knife to prevent Jennifer from dying and incapacitates him.

Shortly afterwards, two policemen appear at the front door asking for Ben. Gary lets her into the house. You see the prisoner in a channel on TV and are then shot by Gary.

Gary then frees Jennifer, who doesn’t notice anything, and gives the dead police officers off as their kidnappers, whom he hunted down. While he is clearing up traces in the house, Jennifer is attacked by Ben, who survived his brother's attack, and finishes him off with a knife. When she sees a photo of Gary showing him with his brother Ben, looks through she plays the game, shoots Gary and leaves the house.

R-rated version

This is the uncut theatrical version that was also released in Germany. In Germany she received an SPIO / JK report and was later indexed by the BPJM .

Unrated version

This version was only released in the United States . It is an extension of the R-rated version, in which new scenes were inserted and some short shots were swapped. In addition, the end of the R-rated version has been replaced by another ending in which Jennifer herself becomes a murderer because she vigorously acts against several other serial killers in order to avenge her own kidnapping.

FSK-18 version

Since the R-rated version of Captivity was indexed in Germany, a four-minute shorter version was made so that the film could also be sold in Germany.

Thriller version

This version represents the original version of the film. Captivity was originally intended as a psychological thriller , but the film was re-edited due to the increasing popularity of torture films such as Saw . A complete storyline was therefore cut out, in which two police officers are investigating the missing Jennifer, and scenes of torture have been added. The original version was released in Spain as a so-called thriller version .

Reviews

“The temptation to ride the saw wave is certainly great, but if you do it as clumsily as“ Captivity ”the downfall is inevitable. Roland Joffé's film is not only a debacle in itself, but also sits extremely uncomfortably between the chairs: unplanned fluctuating between psychological thriller and exploitation, on the whole predictable and unbelievable in detail. "

Controversy over movie posters

The approval process for the film Captivity was suspended for a month because the posters for the film represented a "serious violation" of the rules, as a spokeswoman for the interest group of the major US film studios is quoted as saying.

Awards (selection)

In 2008 the film was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the categories of Worst Actress (Elisha Cuthbert), Worst Director and Worst Excuse for a Horror Movie .
