Daniel J. Gillies (born March 14, 1976 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian actor who is also a New Zealander .

life and career

Daniel Gillies was in Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba was born, his father was a pediatrician. He grew up in New Zealand and went to Southwell School and Hamilton Boys High School. Gillies married actress Rachael Leigh Cook in 2004 and announced the separation after 14 years of marriage in a joint statement with his ex-wife. Their first daughter was born in September 2013. They had their second child on April 9, 2015. He is a direct descendant of Harold Gillies .

He made his acting debut in the New Zealand drama series Street Legal , where he played Tim O'Connor . He played alongside Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man 2 the role of John Jameson . He has made guest appearances on Navy CIS and True Blood , among others . He has also played the recurring role of original vampire Elijah Mikaelson in Vampire Diaries since 2010 , which he has also played in its spin-off The Originals since 2013 . From June 2012 he played alongside Erica Durance in the drama series Saving Hope, the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joel Goran .
