production

The pilot for the series, which CTV ordered in November 2010, was written by Malcolm MacRury and Morwyn Brebner . In June 2011, Erica Durance and Michael Shanks were signed for two leading roles.

The writers later went to Los Angeles to find a partner among the four largest American television networks. In the end, they found him on NBC . In early March 2013, the stations ordered a 13 episode first season of the series.

Both channels began broadcasting the first season on June 7, 2012. While the series achieved only low ratings in the USA and was removed from the channel's programming after the eleventh episode, the ratings in Canada were convincing, so that CTV in July 2012 ordered a second season of the series without NBC. In November, the season's episode count was increased from 13 to 18. About a year later, in November 2013, CTV ordered a third season of the series with a further 18 episodes. In November 2014, the broadcaster extended the series for a fourth season. A fifth season was ordered in December 2015. In October 2016 it was announced that the series would end with the fifth season.

In the finale of the third season, Daniel Gillies left the series at his own request because he felt too burdened by the double burden of Saving Hope and The Originals . He also didn't want to have to commute back and forth between Canada and the United States because of his family.
