Michael Garrett Shanks (born December 15, 1970 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian actor who starred in the US television series Stargate - Kommando SG-1 as Dr. Daniel Jackson became known. From 2012 to 2017 he played a leading role in the television series Saving Hope .

Life

Michael Shanks was born in Vancouver and grew up in Kamloops . He had his first television appearances in 1993 in guest roles in the series Highlander and The Police Chief .

In 1997, Shanks was cast for a leading role in the new sci-fi series Stargate - Kommando SG-1 . He also lent his voice to the alien Thor in the series . Shanks left Stargate after the fifth season, whereupon the "Save Daniel Jackson" fan campaign was launched, which made him successful for the seventh season as Dr. Daniel brought Jackson back to the screen. While he didn't play a major role in season six, he did have a few guest appearances. At that time he also played the leading role in the German-English-South African co-production Sumuru - Planet der Frauen .

After the series end of Stargate - Kommando SG-1 , he had short supporting roles in various television series such as Smallville and Burn Notice , then also guest appearances in Supernatural - To hell with evil and Endgame . He also played in numerous television films.

From 2012 to 2017, he starred in the Canadian series Saving Hope the lead role of Dr. Charlie Harris .

Private

Shanks has a daughter (* 1998) with the actress Vaitiare Bandera , who also played with Stargate - Kommando SG-1 .

In August 2003 Michael Shanks married his colleague Lexa Doig , who had a supporting role in Stargate - Kommando SG-1 in seasons 9 and 10 . The two have two children together, a daughter (* 2004) and a son (* 2006).

One of his friends is Stargate fellow actor Christopher Judge . Together they created a calendar documentary about women in science fiction films. It consists of an annual calendar with photos and a DVD about the background.
