The Police Chief is an American police series produced for ABC between 1991 and 1995 . There were a total of 94 one-hour episodes.

content

The main character of the series is the police chief Tony Scali, who heads the police in the fictional small town of Eastbridge in the US state of New York . He is overweight and slightly gray, but has worked his way up from the patrolman and knows his job and its dangers very well. That is why he is respected by his subordinates and affectionately called Commish (short for Commissioner ). Tony often solves his problems with humor and creativity rather than force and strength.

An important part of Tony's life are his wife Rachel and children, teenage David, and baby Sarah. The only disruptive factor in the harmonious family is Tony's jobless brother-in-law Arnie, who gets on everyone's nerves with his crazy ideas.

Much of the series dealt with the family life of Tony and his colleagues. In addition, topics such as racism , homophobia , drug use , discrimination against the disabled , sexual abuse of children , illegal immigrants and rape were discussed.

production

The series is based on the experiences of the real New York Police Commissioner Tony Schembri . Although the series was set in the United States, it was primarily filmed in Vancouver , Canada . Chiklis was scripted about ten years younger than Tony Scali at the time, so he had to stuff his clothes and was not allowed to shave his head. Although the series ran for ABC, it was originally planned by CBS . Unbridgeable casting differences between CBS and Stephen J. Cannell ended this collaboration. Sarah Scali, Tony's daughter, was played by twins Dayna and Justine Cornborough .

Awards

In 1993 and 1994 the series was nominated for a number of awards:

In 1996 Theresa Saldana received the NCLR Bravo Award for best series actress.
