Altered Carbon - Altered Carbon (Original title: Altered Carbon ) is an American cyberpunk - and science fiction - television series made by Laeta Kalogridis was designed. The series is based on the book The Immortality Program by Richard Morgan , which was published in 2002. The first season consists of ten episodes and was released on February 2, 2018 via streaming on Netflix . In July 2018 it was announced that a second season of Netflix had been ordered. The eight-episode second season was released on Netflix on February 27, 2020. In August 2020, the series was discontinued after two seasons.
In November 2018, Netflix announced a film for the series. Altered Carbon: Resleeved was published on March 19th, 2020 there. It is an anime that aims to expand the story and the series universe.

season 1
The series takes place in the 24th century in a dystopian world in which it is possible to store one's consciousness and memories on a so-called cortical stack and transfer it to other bodies ( clones ), called sleeves , over galactic distances . Due to the potential immortality of consciousness, the killing of a body is only considered damage to property, only the destruction of a stack is murder. The wealthy class in this society is known as meths , referring to Methuselah . They live in isolation and keep buying or cloning new, young sleeves in order to prolong their lives. Since they also have their stack backed up regularly , they are in fact immortal.
The focus of the plot is the renegade Slovak-Japanese elite soldier Takeshi Kovacs, who was part of the rebel group Envoy together with his sister and is considered to be the last survivor of this group. The leader of the Envoys was Quellcrist "Quell" Falconer, the developer of the stacks , with whom Kovacs also had a relationship.
250 years after the death of his body, he is transferred to the body of a police officer on earth. He receives an assignment from the wealthy Meth Laurens Bancroft, who fears for his life because he has already been murdered and only survives thanks to his backup. During his investigations, Kovacs teams up with the AI Poe and the police officer Kristin Ortega.
season 2
30 years after the Bancroft incident, Kovacs returns to his home planet "Harlan's World" on behalf of another meth . He is one of the founders of human settlement on the planet. Originally the planet was inhabited by an extinct race of aliens, where Quell Falconer developed the stacks and later founded the Envoys. Kovacs receives the body of an elite soldier, the AI Poe continues to accompany him. Since his client is murdered on arrival, Kovacs goes into hiding while the founders are murdered one after the other.
