Uta Briesewitz

Uta Briesewitz (born September 1, 1967 in Leverkusen ) is a German camerawoman and television director who currently works in Hollywood and has worked on films such as Die Herrschaft der Schatten and Arthur .

Life

Uta Briesewitz grew up with two siblings as the daughter of an architect and a teacher in Leverkusen . She was introduced to painting as a child, became interested in photography at an early age and was influenced by German television, in particular by works by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and François Truffaut . Already after the tenth grade she began an internship in a Cologne production company and was quickly employed as a camerawoman for a wide variety of productions, including sports broadcasts such as tennis, ice hockey and football, as well as talk shows. After working for this company for three years, she went to Berlin to study at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin . At the same time she continued to work for television and was able to successfully complete her studies in 1990 after four years. But since she only got TV offers after graduation and got no further professionally, she began further studies at the American Film Institute , where she refined her craft under Denise Brassard , Robert Primes and Russell Carpenter .

Although she still before the successful completion of their studies with Next Stop Wonderland by Brad Anderson made her first American feature film began for them then a time of financial hardship and unemployment, because the few deals they got were only independent films , that didn't make a lot of money. She moved to live with her sister in Brooklyn . After directing the drama The Scoundrel's Wife , she received an offer to work on the television series The Wire . Since 2010 Briesewitz has also worked as a director on various US series such as Hung - By lengths better , Orange Is the New Black , Awkward - Mein so so called Leben and The 100 .

Awards

2007 won Briesewitz at the Women in Film Crystal Awards the Vision Award for its cinematography. In 2010 she was nominated by the Emmys for best camera in a half-hour series for Hung - Much Better .

Briesewitz has been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers since 2013 .
