The Deuce is an American television series based on an idea by George Pelecanos and David Simon . The story is set in the street prostitution and in the porn scene . The first broadcast took place from September 10 to October 29, 2017 on the US broadcaster HBO .
action
New York City in the 1970s. The name of the series refers to the nickname of the main location, 42nd Street in the borough of Manhattan , which mainly houses amusement shops and adult entertainment. Vincent Martino is young and needs money. The burgeoning porn industry suits the mustache- wearing bartender. At this time, the first sex cinemas were opening in the city, and the boundaries between pornography and prostitution are fluid. Together with his twin brother Frankie, he brings prostitutes off the street, who are now lolling in front of the camera and looking forward to an extra few dollars. While it may seem like easy money, the downside to this scene is sexually transmitted diseases and drug problems .
Cast and dubbing
The series was set to music at the Arena Synchron in Berlin . Holger Twellmann wrote the dialogue books, Martin Keßler directed the dialogue.

production
The series is under the direction of HBO and was co-developed by George Pelecanos and David Simon , who made history with the cult series The Wire . A first trailer for the series was published in early June 2017. The eight episodes of the first season aired in the United States on HBO from September 10 to October 29, 2017. The second episode was shown for the first time on September 10, 2017 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival .
The title of the series refers to the former New York entertainment district in which the film is set, Times Square on 42nd Street in Manhattan . Etymologically, forty deuce (42) became The Deuce , which is also a name for the devil. In gambling, the word describes a two when rolling the dice.
In September 2017, HBO announced the production of a second season of the series. The second season of The Deuce will premiere on HBO on September 9, 2018 .

reception
Reviews
The first season of the series has so far convinced 93 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes , the second season 99 percent.
Lars Weisbrod von der Zeit praised how “the series is documented without comic-like exaggeration” and how it is “not sentimental”. In particular, he highlights a scene in episode 5, "for which not only Maggie Gyllenhaal deserves an Emmy", "but also Uta Briesewitz ".
In his review of the pilot episode, Axel Schmitt from Serienjunkies.de wrote : “As is so often the case with David Simon, no clear story arcs can be discerned in the opening episode. Rather, he plunges us into a world he imagines, designed with strong links to historical reality, populated by countless interesting figures. The play performed by their actors as well as the usual brilliant dialogue from the pen of Simon and Pelecanos ensure that the audience is captivated even without a recognizable red thread. "
