Castle Rock is an American mystery horror anthology television series by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason based on the works and characters of Stephen King . The series is set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. The first season revolves around attorney Henry Deaver ( André Holland ), who returns to his old hometown to represent a nameless boy ( Bill Skarsgård ) who was locked in a kind of animal cage in the deepest basement of Shawshank Prison after the previous prison guard ( Terry O'Quinn ) committed suicide on the day of his retirement.

The first season was released weekly on the video-on-demand platform Hulu from July 25, 2018 . The German-language first broadcast took place between January 25 and February 15, 2019 on StarzPlay . The second season premiered on Hulu on October 23, 2019.

concept

In Castle Rock , numerous characters, events and places from so-called are Castle Rock multiverse contained, yet the series tells a new independent and previously unpublished story by Stephen King , who also served as a consultant on the set of books with. In Castle Rock is a fictional town in Maine , near the (equally fictional) city of Derry, in which also many are settled by Kings stories.

Each season should tell a new story, with new characters and actors.

action

Weird stories have always played out in Castle Rock, Maine. Just remember the murderous dog Cujo , the breakout from Shawshank prison or the body of the missing boy next to the train tracks. This time the story revolves around Henry Deaver, who disappeared as a boy for eleven days in the dead of winter in 1991 and suddenly reappeared in the middle of frozen Castle Lake, unharmed but without any memory of what happened to him. Therefore he cannot explain why his adoptive father, Pastor Deaver, was found by the search forces with a broken back and died only a little later. Henry is now a Texas criminal defense attorney who is lured back to his hometown from Shawshank Prison by a mysterious cry for help. In the basement of the institution, a nameless young man was found in a kind of bear cage inside a septic tank who does not speak a word - except Henry's name. In Castle Rock, Henry meets his former neighbor Molly Strand ( Melanie Lynskey ), his mother Ruth ( Sissy Spacek ), who is now suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and her new partner Alan Pangborn ( Scott Glenn ), who, as the former sheriff of the town, found and saved Henry at the time . They all seem somehow involved in the mystery of the mysterious prisoner, in which some see the devil.

Cast and dubbing

The series is synchronized in Berlin by SDI Media Germany GmbH . The dialogue book is written by Horst Müller, while Dennis Mohme directs the dialogue.

Relation to other works by Stephen King

In the anthology series Castle Rock , various characters from his narrative universe come together.

Shawshank Prison is shown, which is the same prison from the Oscar-nominated film The Condemned , which was a central location in the film. The prison plays an important role in "Castle Rock".

Sheriff Alan Pangborn, in Castle Rock played by Scott Glenn in older and Jeffrey Pierce in recent years, emerged as a film character in 1993 in The Dark Half , played by Michael Rooker , as well as in the film drama Needful Things - In a small town in that time played by Ed Harris . In addition to fictional ones, there are also real connections: Sissy Spacek, for example, was the leading actress in the world's first King film adaptation Carrie - Des Satan's Youngest Daughter (1976) based on King's novel Carrie . Bill Skarsgard played the clown Pennywise in the screen adaptation It (2017) .

reception

Reviews

The first season of Castle Rock has so far received approval from 87 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

Matthew Gilbert ( Boston Globe ) says Castle Rock is a gigantic basket full of Easter Eggs for Stephen King fans, but for everyone else it's a decent series of supernatural secrets waiting to be deciphered.

Hannes Stein is enthusiastic around the world , especially about the substitution of horror: “The fact that the makers of this television series don't jump in the viewer's face with horror, but give horror time to unfold, is not a flaw: it makes the story because it is told so subtly, even more sinister. "

Matthias Hannemann wrote about the first season on faz.net , the story sweeps you away from the first second.
