Kingdom Hospital is an American television series from 2004. The series is an adaptation by Stephen King on the miniseries Hospital of the Spirits by the Danish director Lars von Trier . Many of the original story elements of the original have been retained. Sometimes the characters even have the same names. Directed by Craig R. Baxley .

Action overview

The story takes place in the fictional Kingdom Hospital in Lewiston (Maine) , which stands on the property of a burned down textile factory, in which uniforms were made during the American Civil War (an allusion to the fire of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911, in which 146 girls and women between the ages of 13 and 25 perished). Before the current hospital was built, there was already a hospital on the same site, which also burned down and is known as the "Old Kingdom". Various cellars of the old hospital still exist under the “new kingdom”.

Mrs. Druse, a woman with the ability to communicate with ghosts, is constantly trying to be admitted to the hospital to make contact with strange ghosts in the hospital. Instead, she is repeatedly exposed as a hypochondriac and sent home. With the help of the doctor Dr. Hook finally manages to get accepted. In addition, she succeeds in convincing Hook to find out the truth about the hospital and the mysterious ghosts together with her. Particularly in the foreground are the ghosts of a little girl who was killed after the fire in the factory, and of a male teenager who was part of horrific experiments in the old kingdom, as well as a strange animal called Antibus (in the original version Antubis , derived from Anubis and Anteater , English for anteater ), which resembles a large anteater .

And then there is the gifted artist Peter Rickman. Rickman is hit by a truck while jogging and seriously injured. The driver of the accident vehicle commits a hit and miss . None of the passing road users sees the seriously injured person. Then a large, mysterious animal that resembles an anteater appears and saves its life. But only on the condition that Rickman pays a price to save him. Rickman is rescued and is now comatose with severe injuries to his head and spine in hospital room 426.

The series also contains several subplots, such as that of the arrogant head doctor Dr. Stegman, who is to be accepted into a secret organization of doctors ("The Guardians of the Kingdom") in order to avoid the consequences of malpractice . Or that of the young doctor Dr. Elmer Traff, who is constantly trying to attract the much more mature Dr. Conquer Lona Massingale.
