In the tall grass (Original title: In the Tall Grass ) is a horror - thriller from Vincenzo Natali , who in September 2019 at the Fantastic Fest celebrated its world premiere in Austin and in the program of the October 4, 2019 Netflix was taken. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King and Joe Hill .

action

Siblings Becky and Cal DeMuth are on their way to San Diego to give pregnant Becky a fresh start. On their way to California they drive down a country road in Kansas. When they stop at an eerie, abandoned church because Becky is overcome by morning sickness, they hear a young boy calling for help from the tall grass that surrounds the area.

When they both step into the grass, they quickly lose each other. Apparently there is no way out of this wide grass. Time and space seem to behave there in a way that contradicts logic. Voices come from all directions, and the place where they are just now is different in the next second. Tobin Humboldt, the little boy who called for help, isn't the only person who has got lost in this grass. There is also Tobin's father Ross, who Becky and Cal initially believe could help them, but gradually he turns into a sinister figure. They all seem to be drawn to and influenced by a black monolith that sits in the middle of the grass field.

production

The film is based on the horror novel In the Tall Grass by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill . This was published in two parts in the men's magazine Esquire in June / July and August 2012 . The novel was published in a German translation by Hannes Riffel under the title In the high grass . In it, the inseparable siblings Becky and Cal go on a shore excursion to Kansas. A little boy has got lost in the man-high grass on the prairie, calling for help. Your rescue operation is turning more and more into a bad trip.

Directed by Vincenzo Natali , who also adapted the novel for the film.

Laysla De Oliveira and Avery Whitted took on the roles of siblings Becky and Cal DeMuth. Patrick Wilson plays Ross Humboldt, Harrison Gilbertson plays Travis McKean, the father of Becky's unborn child.

The film celebrated its world premiere on September 20, 2019 at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. On October 3rd, 2019 he opened the Sitges Film Festival ; Netflix released it the following day .

reception

Chris Evangelista from SlashFilm writes that the film is often visually breathtaking, when the colors in the landscape change from a rich green to blood red, shot after shot. When things get worse and worse, Vincenzo Natali also finds beauty in brutality. Nevertheless, Im Tall Gras could never fully devote himself to the horror that lurks in him, and if Natali wants the film to be darker, meaner and more evil, the horror will be neglected. A horror masterpiece lurks somewhere under the blades of grass in this film, but it gets lost in all the green. The film is unsettling, but it could have been much more terrifying. Evangelista therefore recommends viewing the film and the novel on which it is based separately from one another.

Patrick Wilson plays Ross Humboldt in the film

Meagan Navarro from bloody-disgusting.com suspects that connoisseurs of the novel may be disappointed that the horrific and taboo-breaking moments of the work have been removed, but that does not mean that the adaptation gets by without blood and brutality, but these are less explicit. What was a simple narrative in King's case is a strange journey into the surreal here. The novel only serves as a basic framework for the film. Becky's relationship with Travis, the father of her unborn child, will be expanded. Like a number of other film critics, Navarro also emphasizes the performance of the actor Patrick Wilson , who in the role of Ross Humboldt brings his typical charm, but also portrays the character in a multi-layered manner. He played Ross a bit like Jekyll and Hyde, who makes you laugh one moment and take cover the next.

Josh Millicanon of Dread Central writes that one should think of the premise of the film as a kind of Bermuda triangle that is not in the middle of the sea but is just as mysterious: “What if there was a metaphysical death zone that you simply, innocently into and accidentally stumble into it? ”Most likely, Im Tall Grass felt like a blood relative of The Mist , according to Millicanon, as there are some psychedelic moments that convey evidence of a terrible threat from outer space. Natali has created a world that is beautiful and calming before it turns into a metaphysical nightmare when she lets the dark weeds enclose its prey from the tall grass, which every driver would like to take a few photos of.
