action

The young couple Burt and Vicky are driving their car somewhere in the vastness of Nebraska when they suddenly run over a boy. However, this one was already thrown dead on the street. They pack the body in the trunk and want to take it to the nearest town to hand it over to the authorities. You arrive at Gatlin, an apparently completely deserted city. Both discover that all of the adult residents were killed by the children following a bloody cult.

Led by Isaac and his right-hand man, Malachai, the children kill any adults who come too close to the city. Each of the community must sacrifice themselves on their nineteenth birthday to the demon "He who walks behind the ranks", which is, however, referred to as "going to him". The siblings Job and Sarah are among the few children who have not yet succumbed to the mass madness. Sarah has " the sight "; she sees the future and paints it in pictures. Since this helps Isaac recognize danger, he lets the two of them play and listen to music in peace, which is normally forbidden.

Burt and Vicky find the two children and gain their trust. Shortly thereafter, Vicky is kidnapped and taken to the corn field to be sacrificed. However, Burt manages to free Vicky. Malachai has meanwhile taken power and brought Isaac to one of the crosses as a sacrifice, as he considers him “too weak” as a leader. “He who goes behind the rows” gets Isaac, who in turn briefly returns after a while to bring Malachai “to him” as well.

Burt and Vicky flee to a barn with Job and Sarah and a few other younger children to protect themselves from the upcoming storm. Job has a page from the Bible that highlights a passage from Revelation. It says here that you can defeat the demon with fire. Burt and Job manage to soak the cornfield with kerosene and set it on fire, which ultimately destroys "him who walks behind the rows".

The film ends with Burt and Vicky going on to Seattle and wanting to have the two children for a week.
