Ana Lily Amirpour ( Persian آنا لیلی امیرپور; * 1980 in Margate , England , Great Britain ) is an American film director and screenwriter .

Life

Ana Lily Amirpour is of Iranian descent, her parents emigrated in 1979 due to the Islamic Revolution of Tehran from the United Kingdom. She was born in England, where her father worked as a doctor. As a child, eight year old, she moved with her parents to the United States to Miami , Florida , later, the family lived in Bakersfield , California . Amirpour was already shooting clips with her father's camera at the age of twelve. He had wished that she would follow in his footsteps and share his interest in anatomy since he was now working as an orthopedic surgeon . Amirpour's artistic disposition led her parents to hope that she might pursue a career as a plastic surgeon .

After finishing school, Amirpour wanted to study biology , but quickly gave up on this goal. After the summer she attended art school in San Francisco and then the film school at Los Angeles University , where she graduated. She made contacts in the film business and worked for Tobey Maguire 's production company . She soon left this circle because she saw no chance for herself there. She came to Germany for the Berlinale Talent Campus , made her first short film and then decided to quit the studio business.

The short film Six and a Half was made in 2009 and Amirpour wrote the script and directed it. While making and writing other short films, she starred in the 2012 film The Garlock Incident , having initially only appeared in one of her short films as an actress. In 2014 her first feature film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night , was released, for which she wrote the script, directed and played a small role. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released in German cinemas in 2015. Amirpour received many good reviews for this, which also acknowledged the discussion about her Iranian origins.

At the beginning of 2015 she started her next project The Bad Batch . Again Amirpour was responsible for the script and direction. Keanu Reeves starred alongside Jason Momoa .
