André Holland (born December 28, 1979 or 1982 in Bessemer , Alabama ) is an American actor .

Life

André Holland attended Florida State University and New York University . He graduated from the latter with a Master of Fine Arts in 2006 .

At the beginning of his career, André Holland mainly appeared in plays. In 2006 he appeared on television for the first time in the series Law & Order . In 2008 he was in the film Buffalo Soldiers '44 - The Miracle of St. Anna in the party. A year later, the film Bride Wars followed . In 2010 he was seen in an episode of Damages - Im Netz der Macht . In 2011 he starred alongside Ryan Hansen and Danneel Ackles in the short-lived NBC series Friends with Benefits . After appearing on Burn Notice , she again played a leading role in the comedy series 1600 Penn alongside Jenna Elfman between 2012 and 2013 . In 2013 he starred as Wendell Smith in the biographical sports film 42 - The True Story of a Sports Legend . For the Cinemax series The Knick , Holland has been slipping into the role of Algernon Edwards , a doctor at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital, since 2014 .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
