Widows (original title Widows ) is a British -American thriller directed by Steve McQueen , which released on November 6, 2018 in the United Kingdom and on November 16, 2018 in US theaters. It was released in German on December 6, 2018. The film is based on a British mini-series from the 1980s and tells the story of three women who, after the death of their criminal husbands, take on the unfinished, last job of thieves as widows.

Veronica lives an idyllic life with her partner Harry Rawlings in a luxury apartment in Chicago. Harry can only make such a life possible for them by robbing other people. When one of his jobs goes wrong and his gang's getaway car is shot at by the police until it goes up in flames and all the men are killed, Veronica is suddenly a widow. What's more, she's a widow whose husband left her $ 2 million in debt. Jamal Manning quickly shows up at Veronica's apartment and asks her to liquidate her assets, including the spacious penthouse in which she lives. His collector Jatemme regularly reminds her how little time she has left and that it would be the last payment in her life that she would not make.
Harry left a notebook for Veronica. It contains the plot for a robbery he didn't come to. Veronica decides to carry out this raid herself in order to be able to repay the two million. She makes contact with two widows of other gang members: Linda, whose husband gambled away the rent for her clothing store. Steve McQueen directed the film and wrote the screenplay for the film together with bestselling author Gillian Flynn . The film is based on a British miniseries by Lynda La Plante ( Hot Suspicion ), the first season of which was broadcast in 1983 and the second season of 1985 on ITV television in the United Kingdom. In an interview with the FAZ , when asked that "during the shooting the clap of thunder from the #MeToo movement made Hollywood shake" and that his film "exactly met the mood of the post- #MeToo era", McQueen replied: "When I was thirteen I saw on television the series and could identify strongly with these women who are resisting their fate. I was a little black boy in London. You'd assume that things have changed in terms of discrimination since then. So I'm all the happier when the film helps drive the changes that have started. "
The committed actors include, as it became known in September 2016, Viola Davis , who can be seen as Veronica in a leading role. The film music was composed by Hans Zimmer . The film has so far received the approval of 91 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 8.1 out of a possible 10 points. Owen Gleiberman of Variety says that the dialogues in the film are full of ribald insults and Steve McQueen creates a hypnotic panorama of everyday corruption, the less like a to thriller anfühle than a film by Robert Altman or a novel by Richard Price .
