Widows (original title Widows ) is a British -American thriller directed by Steve McQueen , which released on November 6, 2018 in the United Kingdom and on November 16, 2018 in US theaters. It was released in German on December 6, 2018. The film is based on a British mini-series from the 1980s and tells the story of three women who, after the death of their criminal husbands, take on the unfinished, last job of thieves as widows.

action

Veronica lives an idyllic life with her partner Harry Rawlings in a luxury apartment in Chicago. Harry can only make such a life possible for them by robbing other people. When one of his jobs goes wrong and his gang's getaway car is shot at by the police until it goes up in flames and all the men are killed, Veronica is suddenly a widow. What's more, she's a widow whose husband left her $ 2 million in debt. Jamal Manning quickly shows up at Veronica's apartment and asks her to liquidate her assets, including the spacious penthouse in which she lives. His collector Jatemme regularly reminds her how little time she has left and that it would be the last payment in her life that she would not make.

Harry left a notebook for Veronica. It contains the plot for a robbery he didn't come to. Veronica decides to carry out this raid herself in order to be able to repay the two million. She makes contact with two widows of other gang members: Linda, whose husband gambled away the rent for her clothing store. And Alice, who no longer has a source of income and is forced by her mother to work as an escort girl. Linda's babysitter Belle joins as a driver later. Although none of them have criminal experience, the women carry out Harry's plan.

production

Staff and cast

Steve McQueen directed the film and wrote the screenplay for the film together with bestselling author Gillian Flynn . The film is based on a British miniseries by Lynda La Plante ( Hot Suspicion ), the first season of which was broadcast in 1983 and the second season of 1985 on ITV television in the United Kingdom. In an interview with the FAZ , when asked that "during the shooting the clap of thunder from the #MeToo movement made Hollywood shake" and that his film "exactly met the mood of the post- #MeToo era", McQueen replied: "When I was thirteen I saw on television the series and could identify strongly with these women who are resisting their fate. I was a little black boy in London. You'd assume that things have changed in terms of discrimination since then. So I'm all the happier when the film helps drive the changes that have started. "

The committed actors include, as it became known in September 2016, Viola Davis , who can be seen as Veronica in a leading role. In November 2016, Cynthia Erivo followed , who took on the role of Belle in the film. In February 2017, Daniel Kaluuya , Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki , who plays Alice, followed. Liam Neeson , whose engagement became known in March 2017, plays Davis' husband in the film. Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall joined the crew in April 2017 . Garret Dillahunt , Jacki Weaver , Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Lukas Haas followed in May 2017, Carrie Coon in June 2017 and Michael Harney and Jon Bernthal , who plays Florek, one of the widows' deceased husbands, in August 2017 . Originally, Jennifer Lawrence was supposed to play a role in the film.

reception

Age rating

In the USA, the MPAA gave the film the R rating for "restricted", i.e. restricted, which corresponds to a release from the age of 17. In Germany, he was released from the age of 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “Individual depictions of drastic violence and the sometimes sexualized and racist language can overwhelm children and young people under the age of 16. But 16-year-olds are able, on the basis of their media experience, to place these aspects in the context of the narrative and to distance themselves sufficiently. Since violence never has a positive connotation and is always portrayed with empathy for the victims, there is no risk of socio-ethical disorientation for this age group. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far received the approval of 91 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 8.1 out of a possible 10 points. The film also won the 20th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Best-Reviewed Thriller 2018 category . In December 2017, Widows was put on the list of the 20 most anticipated films of the 2018 cinema year by the industry journal Variety by film critic Nick Schager .

Owen Gleiberman of Variety says that the dialogues in the film are full of ribald insults and Steve McQueen creates a hypnotic panorama of everyday corruption, the less like a to thriller anfühle than a film by Robert Altman or a novel by Richard Price . Gleiberman also notes that many of the film's dramatic scenes are so striking that it might have been a better film if the robbery had been omitted, which would have made the film no longer a thriller. The strongest aspect of the film is how it connects us with its desperate heroines who are beyond the point of just wanting to have fun and who care less about their well-being than about survival. Gleiberman particularly highlights the acting performance of Viola Davis , who let the viewer know in every scene that Veronica lives in a world of betrayal, and just as McQueen directed the film, this also means that she is the victim of a society that no longer take care of us.

For Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter , Veronica is also at the center of the sensitive plot as a victim of many years of deception and a double loss. Her need for revenge, understanding and ultimately survival is the greatest motivation for her, and driven inexorably by it, she is the axis around which most of the action revolves. Davis is outstanding in this role. McCarthy goes on to say that, as is often the case in the noir melodramas of the 1940s and 1950s, an urban crime story in Widows is a successful way of exploring what society is doing. What could have remained a solid crime film about criminal women who take matters into their own hands is also electrifying with racist, political and gender-specific questions. Where most filmmakers would have been content to stick to the superficial story, McQueen seems to have been careful to keep the drama sizzling on multiple flames at every moment.

"The German distributor decided on the lurid title Widows - Tödliche Witwen , which suggests cool power women in black who are somehow taking revenge. In the original, this directorial work is simply called Widows , which is much closer to the tragic, existentially tired mood of the main protagonist between shock and despair is coming ", explains Anke Westphal in her review for epd Film . " Widows is advertised as a heist movie , but transcends the genre both through the highly suggestive staging that is typical for McQueen and through the comments on politics, gender relations, ethnicities and classes that are organically embedded in the plot."

Thomas Klein writes in the Berliner Zeitung : "The cinema is full of grandiose so-called heist films (large-scale thefts) and captivating robber pistols, but women - even with a genre maestro like Michael Mann - always have optical accessories or narrative cues. What Happened to the wives and friends and families after the last fishing trip, when the men are gone, dead or locked away forever, has often only been worth subordinate clauses. The British Steve McQueen makes the aftermath the focal point his story. "

"May it be a coincidence, then it is at least an interesting one: Just at the historic moment when the first candidate for the American presidency narrowly missed it, the American thriller cinema invented the counter-model to the glorious pioneer, the women gang. She came in the form of the comedic blockbusters Ocean's 8 to the cinema at the beginning of the year, she shoots her way through the satirical social media war of a small town in [...] Assassination Nation and is now running in the multi-layered thriller Widows - Tödliche Widwen zu great form ", recognizes Ursula März in Die Zeit a possible film trend.

From the German Film and Media Review was Widows - Deadly widows with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “The film virtually unmasked the feeling of politics, criminal gangs and the police in passing, while at the same time this gives the action its dynamism. The four women oppose the corrupt man's world with their blueprint of a peaceful world with a family and their own livelihood. ”The viewers are therefore happy to forgive the smart and likeable ladies for the moral offense that stands before this opportunity is realized, and the German dubbing can also join in keep up with the artistic quality of the film, with which Steve McQueen adds a masterpiece to the all-American genre of the gangster film.

Mark Kermode rated the film with 5 stars out of 5 in The Guardian .

The worldwide revenue from cinema shows so far amounts to around 76 million US dollars. In Germany it has recorded 141,260 visitors so far.
