Jonathan Edward "Jon" Bernthal (* 20th September 1976 in Washington, DC , United States ) is an American actor , among other things, a major role in the AMC - television series The Walking Dead played.

Life

Jon Bernthal was born in Washington, DC and grew up where he graduated from Sidwell Friends School . He then studied at Skidmore College , followed by the Chekhov Art Theater , in Moscow , Russia , where he also played professional baseball in the European Professional Baseball Federation. He then completed the Institute for Advanced Theater Training at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge (Massachusetts) . Jon Bernthal completed his Master of Fine Arts in 2002 at the Harvard University theater. After Bernthal had finished his baseball career, he became enthusiastic about the martial art boxing and became a hobby boxer.

Jon Bernthal is the son of Joan Lurie and Eric Lawrence "Rick" Bernthal, who is a lawyer with Latham & Watkins . His paternal grandfather Murray Bernthal was a musician and also a producer. He has two brothers (Nicholas Matthew Bernthal and Thomas Bernthal) and his family is of Jewish descent who emigrated from Munich . Overall, Bernthal's ancestral line stretches back to Austria , Russia , Poland and Lithuania . He is the cousin of Adam Schlesinger and married to the niece of Kurt Angle . With Erin Angle, Bernthal has two sons and a daughter (* August 2011, * February 2013, * February 2015). He currently lives with his family in Venice , Los Angeles . In 2011 Jon founded the non-profit Drops Fill Buckets with his brother Nicholas .

Career

Since graduating in 2002, he has appeared in more than 30 regional and off-Broadway plays, including many with his own award-winning theater company, Fovea Floods . Bernthal has worked at theaters in Los Angeles , New York City , Portland (Maine) and Washington, DC , among others . He played as the lead role of Arturo Ui in the play The resistible rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht at the Portland Stage Company theater. He also worked in LA at the Rogue Machine Theater and the Geffen Playhouse. In New York he worked at the Signature Theater Company in a few plays and at the Studio Theater in his native Washington.

Jon Bernthal's film career began in 2002 with the film Mary / Mary , in which he played the lead role of Manny. He also worked in the 2002 TV series Criminal Intent - Verbrechen im Visier . This was followed by a few other guest appearances on various television series such as How I Met Your Mother , Boston Legal , Without a Trace and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit . From 2006 to 2007 he played in the CBS - sitcom The Class with. Here Bernthal played the role of Duncan Carmello, where he first gained publicity. In 2006 Jon Bernthal played a supporting role in the film World Trade Center and in 2007 in the love drama The Air I Breathe . Afterwards, Bernthal played two leading roles in the films Snitch - A Risky Deal and Two of the Old Style . After Frank Darabont left The Walking Dead because of differences with AMC , he developed the TV series Mob City , which premiered in December 2013. Darabont engaged Jon Bernthal for the main character of Joe Teague. In the same year, Bernthal played a supporting role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street . In 2014 he had another leading role alongside Brad Pitt , Shia LaBeouf , Logan Lerman and Michael Peña in the war film Heart of Steel . In the following years he played various supporting roles, including in the independent film Me and Earl and the Girl , as well as in the films We Are Your Friends and the crime thriller Sicario by director Denis Villeneuve with Emily Blunt in the lead role. He was also featured on the HBO- produced miniseries Show Me a Hero .

Bernthal also took on the role of punisher in the series Marvel's Daredevil in 2016 . A spin-off to the series, which is only dedicated to his role, started in November 2017 under the title Marvel's The Punisher .

Bernthal served as the model and English-speaking voice actor for the character Cole D. Walker in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands playable content "Operation Oracle" released in May 2019 . The update served as a transfer to the sequel Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint , published in October 2019 , in which Bernthal played the role of the main antagonist as Walker.
