action

At the beginning of the 13th century, the height of the High Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church ruled much of the known world. The great influence of Christianity can be seen in the cathedrals that can be found all over Europe.

The Cistercian monk Brother Geraldus docks with his ship on an island in Ireland in order to convince the Irish- speaking brothers living there in a Catholic monastery to surrender a holy relic that he wants to bring to the Vatican, which intends to go on another crusade Jerusalem to begin. The relic is a stone that played a role in the martyrdom of St. Matthias , the thirteenth apostle . Over the centuries Ireland has been torn apart by tribal wars and the growing influence of Norman invaders.

Together they reluctantly go to Rome with the artifact, including Brother Ciaran, Brother Cathal, Brother Rua, the silent lay brother and the young novice Diarmuid, who has so far seen nothing more than their abbey. Rival clans and Norman conquerors cross their path on their pilgrimage to Rome. Bloodshed remains inevitable.
