Richard Crispin Armitage (born August 22, 1971 in Leicester , England ) is a British theater , television and film actor . He became known to a wider audience in 2004 for his portrayal of John Thornton in the film adaptation of the Victorian industrial novel North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell . For several years he worked in the BBC television series Robin Hood and Spooks - In the sights of MI5 . He also played the dwarf Thorin Eichenschild in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the fantasy novel The Hobbit .

life and career

Richard Armitage grew up in Leicestershire . In his youth he was very active musically; Among other things, he played the cello and flute in school and in regional orchestras. At age 14 he attended Pattison College, a private school in Coventry specializing in the performing arts. He graduated from school there with A-Levels in English and music. He then went to Budapest for six weeks , where he worked in a circus in order to obtain his membership card for the actors' union.

After returning to England , he worked temporarily as an assistant choreographer and in musicals such as Cats , 42nd Street and Annie Get Your Gun . These roles earned him enough money to take a three-year course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

During his time at LAMDA Richard Armitage got a small supporting role in the movie Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace . After graduating in 1998 and a short time at the theater, he had a small role in the film Lover or Loser alongside actors Douglas Henshall and Jennifer Ehle , as well as in Cleopatra with Timothy Dalton and Billy Zane . Other theater roles followed, as well as an 18-month tour with the Royal Shakespeare Company , during which he played Angus in Macbeth .

He then began his television career, first with appearing in two episodes of Doctors as Dr. Tom Steele , then as Craig in an episode of Casualty . But it wasn't until 2002 that Armitage got his first major TV role as John Standring in Sally Wainwright's Sparkhouse , a modern portrayal of Storm Heights . In 2003 Richard Armitage appeared in three ITV dramas, first as Lee in Cold Feet Season 5 , then as Captain Ian MacAlwain in Ultimate Force Season 2 , and finally starring alongside Julie Graham and Alun Armstrong in Kay Mellor 's Between the Sheets played the role of Paul Andrews .

Then Richard Armitage got the role that took his career a big step forward: Portraying cotton manufacturer John Thornton in Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South .

His portrayal of Thornton received the highest praise from both critics and fans, which eventually led to the crash of the server for North & South's BBC message board . It is known that Richard Armitage himself wrote on this message board, surprised at the furore he had apparently caused, and thus he began to send messages to fansites dedicated to him for years.

In addition to his role as Steve in the British film Frozen from 2005, he also had guest roles in the famous BBC drama Inspector Lynley and in the ITV drama Malice Aforethought .

2005 was a busy year for Richard Armitage as he starred as Dr. Alec Track in ITV hospital drama The Golden Hour . However, the drama was not extended for a second season. This was followed by a role as Peter Macduff on BBC's ShakespeaRe-Told, alongside James McAvoy and Keeley Hawes .

In 2006 his career took another leap forward. He got the lead role of Claude Monet in the BBC three-part film The Impressionists . Another milestone was the role of the evil Sir Guy of Gisborne in a new adaptation of Robin Hood . Alongside Keith Allen as Sheriff of Nottingham , the two of them soon became popular favorites as villains. Armitage recorded four audio books retelling the first four episodes of Robin Hood's first season .

Richard Armitage's popularity skyrocketed after appearing in The Vicar of Dibley's two-part Christmas special in 2006. His role as Harry Kennedy attracted more TV viewers at Christmas than any other show.

In 2007, Armitage was busy directing the dramas George Gently for BBC One , Marie Lloyd for BBC Four and Agatha Christie's Marple Fatal Error for ITV. He returned to Budapest for six months in the summer to film Robin Hood's second season as Sir Guy of Gisborne .

In early 2008 it was confirmed that Richard Armitage had gotten a role in the hit BBC One series Spooks - In the sights of MI5 . The filming for the 7th season took place in and around London and also in Moscow . For the role of Lucas North , Armitage lost some weight to make the role more believable. The series received critical acclaim and was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for "Best Drama".

In 2009 a few audio books followed before Armitage slipped back into the role of Sir Guy of Gisborne for the third and final season of Robin Hood in March .

In May 2009 Richard Armitage starred in the BBC One drama Moving On ; That summer, the eighth season of Spooks was filmed with Armitage as Lucas North (broadcast November and December 2009 on BBC One).

In the August 2011 blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger , Armitage got the 3-minute role of Nazi spy Heinz Kruger.

Armitage took on his role as Lucas North for the last time in 2010 for Season 9 of Spooks . In 2010 he also played the role of former SAS soldier John Porter in Strike Back . Another season of the series was filmed in South Africa in the spring of 2011 . Armitage only played a minor role, however, as he was already in New Zealand at the time of filming to portray Thorin Eichenschild in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the novel The Hobbit . Filming for this three-part film began in March 2011 and ended in July 2012.

In 2014 Armitage played the lead role in the socially critical independent film Urban and The Shed Crew based on the memories of Bernard Hare, which is filmed in Leeds, UK. The film will premiere on November 7, 2015 at the Leeds International Film Festival.

In the summer of 2014 Armitage returns after ten years absence from the stage as John Proctor in Arthur Miller's The Crucible ( witch hunt back on stage). The play will be staged at London's Old Vic Theater , directed by Yaël Farber. Armitage received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for best male leading actor for his performance .

In 2015 he embodied the Red Dragon in six episodes, Francis Dolarhyde in the third season of Bryan Fuller's Hannibal TV series.

In January 2017, it was confirmed that Armitage would star in the Heist comedy Ocean's 8, produced by Warner Bros. and Steven Soderbergh .
