Castlevania is an American animated web television series whose first season in July 2017 the United States of Netflix via streaming was published. The plot is an adaptation of the Castlevania video game series and is based in particular on the game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse .

When his wife is burned at the stake by the church as an alleged witch, the vampire Count Vlad Dracula Tepes swears that all residents of Wallachia will pay with their lives after a year. After the ultimatum expires, Dracula's army of monsters and demons attacks the country and spreads fear and terror among the population. The last survivor of the Belmont family Trevor Belmont faces this threat and is supported by the magician Sypha Belnades and Dracula's son Alucard .

Production and publication

The first season, which comprises four episodes, went online on July 7, 2017. Netflix announced a second season of eight episodes of the vampire animation series and released it on October 26, 2018. The third season was released on March 5, 2020 on Netflix. In the same month, Netflix ordered a fourth season.

In Wallachia in 1455, a young woman named Lisa, who wants to become a doctor, tries to track down Vlad Dracula Tepes, a vampire with advanced scientific knowledge. Intrigued by her courage and ambition, Dracula agrees to teach her, while she in turn offers to help him reconnect with humanity. The two eventually fall in love and get married. Twenty years later (1475) in the city of Târgovişte , Lisa was burned at the stake after a bishop discovered scientific equipment in her home and accused her of witchcraft. Desperate and angry upon learning of his wife's death, Dracula declares that people have a year to make their peace. After that every person in Wallachia will die at his hand. His son Alucard tries to convince him that instead of blaming all of humanity, he should look for the person responsible, but Dracula refuses to listen and attacks him. A year later, the archbishop held a celebration in spite of Dracula. As promised, Dracula kills the archbishop, destroys the church and orders his demon army to kill everyone who remains in Wallachia. As the army spreads across the country, people blame the kingdom's noble families, including the Belmonts.

After an argument in a pub, Trevor Belmont searches for food and rest in the town of Gresit, which was besieged by Dracula's forces every night. As he walks through town, he learns that the townspeople are accusing a group of magicians known as "speakers" of being responsible for Dracula's attack. He saves her elder from two corrupt priests and brings him home to the other speakers. Trevor insists that they leave town for their own safety, but the elder refuses because his grandson has disappeared after venturing into the catacombs in search of the "Sleeping Soldier," a legendary hero of whom they believe he can defeat Dracula. Reluctantly, Trevor agrees to bring back the missing grandchild.

As he explores the catacombs, Trevor realizes that they are unusually constructed and contain fixtures that match his family's ancient descriptions of fixtures in Dracula's castle. When he finds a stone statue with the face of a speaker, Trevor is attacked by a giant cyclops. He defeats the creature, lifts the curse on it and saves the elder's grandchild, Sypha Belnades. After Sypha is returned to her grandfather, Trevor is called to church by the local bishop, who appears to be the same bishop who ordered Lisa's execution. The bishop tells Trevor to leave Gresit before sunset as he plans to lead a mob to kill the speakers. For Trevor's failure to intervene, he offers to spare him and restore his family name in return. With the speakers refusing to withdraw, Trevor hides them in the Cyclops' chamber and fights with the priest who leads the mob before they can all escape into town.

Night falls when Dracula's army attacks Gresit and kills the bishop. As Trevor continues his escape, he is supported by Sypha, who turns out to be a powerful magician. Trevor exposes the actions of the clergy as the real reason for Dracula's invasion and assists the people in their defense against the demons. During the battle, the ground breaks under Trevor and Sypha and they fall deep into the city's underground catacombs. As they penetrate deeper, they find the "sleeping soldier". It turns out that this is Alucard who has retired to heal for a year since his last fight with Dracula. Trevor and Alucard begin to fight each other, but after seeing how determined Trevor and Sypha are, Alucard gives in and offers to help. The three prepare to challenge Dracula and end the conflict forever.

Trevor fends off the demons while Alucard tries to find Dracula's castle with the mirror so that Sypha can use the spell. Dracula moves his castle to Brăila and the vampire lords lead their troops over the bridge to attack the city. With the help of Hector, Carmilla succeeds in having the water under the bridge consecrated by the revived bishop and has the bridge collapsed by her soldiers. Some of Dracula's troops plunge into the holy water, the rest of them withdraw. Carmilla lets her army storm Dracula's castle, where the troops fight in the main hall. Meanwhile, Sypha can end the spell, which first results in Dracula's castle ending up in the river, where most of the vampires are destroyed by the consecrated water. Finally, Sypha succeeds in placing the lock over the library.

Trevor, Sypha and Alucard enter the castle and defeat the remaining vampires in the main hall. Dracula and Isaac withdraw, and Dracula sends Isaac to a distant place for protection. Alucard reaches the study with Trevor and Sypha and begins the fight. The duel leads Dracula and Alucard through the whole castle to Alucard's nursery. There Dracula is weakening when he realizes that he is trying to kill his own son, which can stab his heart. Trevor beheads the crumbling vampire and Sypha burns the remains.

Alucard wants the castle to be Dracula's tomb, but Trevor encourages him to keep the castle and the Belmont library. Meanwhile, Isaac begins to build an army of the undead. Carmilla enslaves Hector and tries to take advantage of the power vacuum left by Dracula's death. Trevor and Sypha set out to find the speakers, while Alucard stays behind in the castle and is overcome with grief.

At the industry portal Serienjunkies.de , reviewer Mario Giglio found benevolent words after the first episode and, in view of the coherent overall presentation, ignored the not always completely fluid animation: “It's always good to see when efforts are made to animation for older viewers outside of Japan and 'Castlevania' does a lot right in its first episode. Most importantly, the franchise name isn't just used as a jumping off point for generic monster slicing. Instead, they seem to be genuinely interested in the relatively rich mythology of the video game template. "
