Inspector Lynley (Original title: The Inspector Lynley Mysteries ) is a British crime series by the BBC based on the novel by Elizabeth George . In the United Kingdom, the series started in 2001 with the episode A Great Deliverance . In Germany, the episodes have been broadcast on ZDF since 2002 in the Sunday crime series and then on ZDFneo .

The series' main characters are the noble Detective Inspector (DI) Thomas Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton, and his talented but rebellious assistant, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers.

By the middle of the third season, George's novel was filmed; After A Traitor to Memory (published in Germany under the name Never should you forget ), the last published Lynley novel to date, was completed as a film version, further cases based solely on the characters in the novel were filmed. A total of six seasons with a total of 23 episodes were broadcast. The BBC has stopped producing the series with Recognize Your Enemy .

The German titles of the films are all biblical quotations, some in very ancient text versions.

Leading roles

Inspector Thomas Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) Lynley is one of the most respected police officers in New Scotland Yard's Criminal Investigation Department. He is an astute, polite, and distinguished police officer who has a keen sense of manners and morals. Despite being the complete opposite of his colleague Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, they make a good team. In the pilot episode God save this house (orig .: A Great Deliverance) you get an insight into the private life of Inspector Thomas Lynley. There he is devastated when the woman he loved married his best friend. In the further course of the series he begins a relationship with his old friend Helen Clyde / Lynley ( Lesley Vickerage ), in which he shows himself passionate and romantic; in the episode Mein ist die Rache (orig .: A Suitable Vengeance) they marry. In the last episode of the third season, If Wishes were Horses , her car is shot at and her baby dies.

Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small) Havers switched from patrol duty to CID and, unlike Inspector Lynley, comes from a humble background. She is a courageous and lively, but also unauthorized woman in her mid-thirties, who conducts her investigations in a straightforward and unabashed manner. Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers is briefly revoked of her rank due to her unauthorized actions, but soon returned due to her courage.
