Pilot episodes

The two pilot episodes premiered in the UK on March 12 and March 13, 2001 on BBC One . The German broadcaster ZDF showed the first broadcast on June 23 and June 30, 2002. In Austria the first broadcast took place on 22 November 2008 on ORF 2 and in Switzerland the first broadcast took place on 14 February 2005 on SRF 2 .

Father Hart discovers the body of respected parishioner William Teys in Keldale, Yorkshire, England. His traumatized, blood-smeared 16-year-old daughter Roberta crouches next to her. Due to irregularities from the local police force, Lynley and Havers arrive from London.

Inspector Lynley believes in the daughter's innocence and, during the investigation, struggles with the fact that his love, Deborah, has married his best friend. And Sergeant Havers is struggling to find care for her dependent parents.

The first broadcast of the first season was from April 8 to April 29, 2002 on the British broadcaster BBC One. The German broadcaster ZDF broadcast the German-language first broadcast from January 30 to February 23, 2003.

13-year-old Matthew Whateley, a student at the British elite boarding school Bredgar Hall, is found naked and abused in a cemetery. Inspector Thomas Lynley initially rejects the case, but that changes when John Corntel, the teacher in charge of Bredgar Hall and housefather of the murdered boy, asks Lynley to do so. The common school days with Corntel and the spoiled students make the investigation difficult.

In Winslough, Lancashire, the pastor of the small community is poisoned. The main suspicion is directed against Juliet Spence, the manager of the manor, because she has the necessary herbal knowledge. Her husband is the village policeman Steve Shepherd, so Inspector Lynley and Havers start the investigation and soon uncover a mystery from the past of the entire villagers.

The daughter of the radical and ambitious politician Eve Bowen, Charlotte, has disappeared. Eve suspects the ten-year-old's father, editor-in-chief and publisher of a daily newspaper, to be the kidnapper. When Lynley and Havers tune in, Charlotte is dead and another child has disappeared.

During the engagement weekend of Inspector Lynley and Helen Clyde with friends and family at the Howenstow family estate, the business owner Mick Cambrey is murdered in the neighboring village of Nanrunnel. Lynley and Havers begin the investigation and the clues lead to Lynley and Helen's guests in Howenstow.

The bodies of Nicola Maiden and the art student Gerard Cole are found in a camping camp in Derbyshire. Apparently there is no connection between the two. Nicolas father describes her as an ambitious student, but Lynley quickly finds out that Nicola dropped out of her studies and made a career as a call girl. Havers was demoted to constable, but still interferes in the investigation.

The mother of the famous young violin virtuoso Gideon Martin, Eugenie Martin, is run over by a car and killed in the process. Lynley and Havers are hindered during the investigation by Superintendent Webberley, who goes as far as to forge evidence.

The appeal process of the convicted murderess Lizzie Shakespeare fails due to the opinion of the psychology professor Dermot Finnegan. She killed her husband and is serving a life sentence. Finnegan is then threatened by Lizzie's father, Noel Shakespeare, in the courtroom. The next morning Finnegan is killed in a car bomb explosion.

BBC One broadcast the fourth season from March 17 to March 31, 2005 and from April 2 to April 23, 2006 the season was shown on ZDF.

Detective Sergeant Tremayne seeks advice from fellow Inspector Lynley. He spends a few days of vacation at the Howenstow family home, which is adjacent to Tremayne's property. The horse trainer and racing stable owner Stephen Fenner was found hanged in his stable. Lynley is working with his colleague Havers, who is also in Cornwall, on the murder case.

Justin Oborne's remains are found in an old sewer after a flood. He was last seen at the age of six when he disappeared from his own birthday party without a trace. Justin's sister is found dead in Lynley's apartment, and Detective Superintendent Michelle Tate accuses Lynley of murder.

The body of 16-year-old Sarah Middleton is found in a small forest lake. She was kidnapped on her way home from school almost two weeks ago. The autopsy reveals that Sarah was imprisoned for almost a week before she died, was sexually abused, and eventually cut her wrists. Shortly thereafter, 15-year-old Kelly Stevens disappears without a trace after a violent argument with her mother and the search for the perpetrator becomes a top priority.
