When Judith Fuhrmann met the widowed art historian Ernst Lemden, the astute intellectual took her heart by storm with wit and eloquence. A one-night stand becomes a deep love, Judith and Ernst move in together. Over time, the signs of dementia increase in Ernst. He misplaces objects and forgets everyday things like the name of his grandson Emil. Ernst also loses his rhetorical strength and his intellect, initially barely noticeable, later massively. First of all, Ernst is joking and shocked Judith by allegedly forgetting her and her relationship. But the situation is becoming increasingly serious and the disputes regarding the topic of dementia are increasing, also because Ernst deals with his illness every day in order to experience everything and to know everything. He eventually procures poison that he intends to take when his condition is no longer bearable. Judith is against this step, but Ernst convinces her not to destroy the poison at least. He hides the poison behind his wall of books, directly behind the Collected Works of Seneca, and leaves himself a note with the inscription "Seneca brings salvation". As the disease progresses, the gradual extent of dementia becomes apparent. In his former favorite painting The painter Hans Burgkmair and his wife Anna von Lukas Furtenagel , which he used to interpret in many different ways and even wanted to write a book about it, he only sees funny boned men. The further away he dealt with people, the faster they disappear from his memory, so that even the recognition of his children slowly fades. He plays with his grandson Emil like a small child. One evening Ernst tore down his wall of books in a maddened state, instinctively looking for the poison, which Judith found. A one-sided care situation arises from happy, living love. Ernst needs care around the clock and needs to be looked after. Eventually he is unable to walk and is in a wheelchair. Judith is responsible for a man who is no longer able to communicate and who has forgotten his past and his family. Nevertheless, there is a connection between Judith and Ernst that lasts until the end. Judith cares devotedly. One evening, when Ernst can no longer even speak, she mixes the poison she has kept in the semolina, and Ernst seems to be aware of this fact after all. He eats the porridge without hesitation and dies.

Criminal assessment

By deliberately administering the poison in semolina to Ernst, Judith commits murder according to Austrian criminal law, which is threatened with imprisonment of 10 to 20 years or life imprisonment. The milder punishment for killing on request would presumably have to be rejected by the court because Ernst was willing to die, but apparently no serious and urgent request was made. Due to Judith's altruistic motivation, however, the extraordinary mitigation law with a penalty could not be applied for less than a year, whereby this penalty could also be pronounced conditionally.

Reviews

"Formally, the extinction is a conventional narrative film, but with what a broad horizon and how wonderfully it is presented."

- Irene Bazinger : Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"The extinction - top-class with Klaus Maria Brandauer and Martina Gedeck - is a melancholy and strangely positive contribution to the widespread disease Alzheimer's."

"The fact that the topic is conveyed so impressively is thanks to two great actors who illustrate the process of disintegration in a credible and deeply moving manner."
