action

In an isolation ward of the US government Lena, is a former soldier of the United States Army and a professor of molecular biology , an examination subject. In a flashback, she tells how she waited a year for her husband Kane, who was sent to an undercover operation as a soldier , and that he finally showed up unexpectedly and almost without memories with serious internal injuries in the common house. On the way to a hospital , their ambulance was stopped by a special unit and the two were taken to the Southern Reach military facility .

There Lena found out about the psychologist Dr. Ventress reported that three years ago a mysterious incident occurred at a lighthouse on the southern coast and since then a shield called a "shimmer" has overgrown the land and the last remnants of human civilization and has steadily expanded. Her husband was part of the eleventh expedition team to the screened Area X , which should investigate the cause. Kane was the first to ever return from one of these expeditions.

Lena also learned that a twelfth expedition team headed by psychologist Dr. Ventress should make its way to the area. In addition to Dr. Ventress was supposed to include physicist Josie Radek, geomorphologist Cass Sheppard and paramedic Anya Thorensen. Lena convinced Dr. Ventress to join the operation.

The scientists penetrated the unexplored area and lost their perception of time and the memory of the first processes. In dreams, Lena remembered a relationship with a married colleague. Despite the interference with the transmission and reception of the electronic devices they had brought with them, the group continued to advance towards the center of Area X , the lighthouse on the coast. In the swamp overgrown with unknown plants , the women were attacked by a mutated alligator , which they were able to kill and examine. The animal showed characteristics atypical of the species.

On their way to the lighthouse, they came across an old military base that had been taken over by the "glimmer" that had been spreading for several years. Here they found video recordings in which Lena's husband, Kane, was filmed, who was to explore the area as a member of the previous special unit. In the recording, Kane cut open the abdominal wall of another soldier , underneath which snakelike intestines can be seen. The group around Lena, unsettled by the admission, found a disturbing, overgrown structure made of lichen and the body of the killed soldier. During the night, the group was attacked by a giant bear that was kidnapping Cass Sheppard.

Although the remaining women did not agree, they decided to continue and came across plants and animals that were increasingly psychedelic . Lena found Sheppard's body. In an abandoned village, they noticed that the prism-like shimmer apparently created senseless combinations of the DNA of various living things such as animals and plants, and altered visible light and other electromagnetic waves . The scientists also increasingly noticed changes in themselves.

During the overnight stay in the village, the group members were overwhelmed and tied up by the slowly losing mind Anya. She had found out that Lena was the wife of a previous expedition member and accused her of the murder of Cass Sheppard. The bear returned, which uttered Sheppard's death screams, lured Anya away and killed her. Josie managed to break free and shoot the bear. Dr. Ventress then tried to get to the lighthouse alone that night.

During the interrogation in the isolation ward, the officer points out to Lena that Dr. Ventress was terminally ill with cancer and Lena replies that she thought so. She continues her story. Josie apparently mutated into a plant and disappeared. Lena then continued her way to the lighthouse on her own.

When she arrived at the coast, she discovered the remains of previous expeditions at the lighthouse. In the lighthouse she found an organic network with a hole reaching into the depths, a human corpse and a video camera with recordings of her husband. In the recording, the supposed Kane asked a supposed doppelganger of himself to find Lena before killing himself with a phosphorus grenade. As Lena descended into the hole in the lighthouse, she met Dr. Ventress again, which she recognized at first, but then announced "the extinction" and dissolved into a light structure. This created a humanoid figure from a drop of blood from Lena, against which she fought, but which at the same time moved in a mirror image of her. Lena realized that the figure was imitating their movements and finally got the being to pull the splint of a phosphor shell and fled from the lighthouse. The figure on fire first set fire to the human remains of Lena's supposed husband and then the braids in the lighthouse. At the same time as the fire in the lighthouse, the organic structures within the "shimmer" went up in flames and dissolved.

In the isolation ward, Lena learns that her sick husband has suddenly recovered at the same time. When they meet again, the two of them ask each other whether they are really their own person, which Kane denies and Lena leaves unanswered. As they embrace, the typical prism of shimmer can be seen in both of them.

production

On March 26, 2013, it was announced that Paramount Pictures and Scott Rudin Productions had acquired the film rights to Annihilation , the first novel in Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy. In October 2014, Paramount hired ex-Machina writer and director Alex Garland to adapt and direct the film. The film is about a biologist who wants to get to the bottom of her husband's disappearance against the background of an environmental disaster.

On May 7, 2015, Variety reported that Natalie Portman was under discussion for a leading role in the sci-fi movie. The studio was also interested in Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton for other leading roles ; They were to be negotiated with immediately after Portman's final commitment.

In November 2015, the cast of Natalie Portman was confirmed and Gina Rodriguez was also signed. Tessa Thompson joined the cast on January 4, 2016. Jennifer Jason Leigh joined on February 10, 2016. Oscar Isaac was cast in March 2016.

Garland stated in an interview with Creative Screenwriting magazine that his adaptation was only based on the first part of the trilogy. “When I started working on Annihilation , there was only the first of three books. I knew that the author had planned the material as a trilogy, but at the time there was only the manuscript for the first book. So I didn't really have the thought of a trilogy in my head when I started my adaptation. "

Filming began in London in spring 2016. Production could begin when actor David Gyasi joined the cast. Lighthouse Pictures Ltd began filming on location in late April in South Forest, Windsor Great Park . On May 9, 2016, cameraman Rob Hardy released the first pictures from the set. The film was shot on the beach and in the woods of Holkham in North Norfolk from July 13-14.

publication

The film was released on February 23, 2018 in US, Canadian and Chinese cinemas.

Originally, the international theatrical release of the extinction should already take place one day before the US release . In December 2017, however, it was said that there were disputes between the involved production companies of David Ellison (Skydance Media) and Scott Rudin. Ellison criticized the film as "too intellectual and too complicated" after the first test screenings were poor in the summer of 2017, and is said to have suggested changes to make it accessible to a wider audience. Rudin, who had also produced Garland's film Ex Machina , defended the director's version of the film. He was able to prevail in the end, probably also because he had the rights to the Final Cut . Finally Paramount Pictures sold the rights to international distribution to the streaming provider Netflix . On March 12, 2018, 17 days after its theatrical release, Netflix made the film available to the rest of the world on its platform.

There was no theatrical release in Germany, DVD and Blu-ray went on sale on March 14, 2019.

Dubbed version

The German synchronization took over the Berliner Synchron GmbH Wenzel Lüdecke . The dialogue book came from Samira Jakobs. Dorothee Muschter and Klaus Bauschulte were responsible for directing the dialogue.

reception

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 87% of the reviews were positive, out of a total of 184 reviews; the average rating was 7.6 / 10. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 79/100 based on 49 reviews.

Chicago Reader's JR Jones called Alex Garland's cinematic adaptation a "valuable mutation." Alison Willmore wrote for BuzzFeed : " Extinction is a cerebral fuel for nightmares, but the most obvious quality is how little the film has to do with current trends in the mainstream science fiction."

James Berardinelli of ReelViews wrote, "This film, unlike something produced for the masses, is about what happens in the quiet moments between the loud and sensational sequences." Meanwhile, the National Review's Kyle Smith criticized: "Films filming, which are largely vague, is proving to be an excellent opportunity to receive cheering reviews these days, but remaining artistically unclear seems to me to be more of a cover up for not being able to finish the job properly. "

Bjarne Bock emphasized appreciatively at Serienjunkies.de : "In his second directorial work, Alex Garland prompts uncomfortable questions about our innermost motivations and thus provides an impressive visualization of the symptoms of depression ." Bock described the film as a mixture of film classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey , Stalker , Apocalypse Now , Alien , Jurassic Park and Avatar .

Grossing results

The budget was just under 40 million US dollars. Within the first three weeks, the film grossed around US $ 26 million in US cinemas, of which US $ 11 million was already earned on the premiere weekend at the end of February 2018. The international broadcasting rights are held by Netflix , which is why no precise information can be given for success abroad.
