Benedict Wong (born June 3, 1971 in Salford , Greater Manchester ) is a British actor .

Life

Wong grew up in Salford, Greater Manchester , and attended Salford College there . His parents are from Hong Kong and immigrated to England via Ireland .

From 1993/94 Wong appeared in professional productions, but was limited to clichéd Chinese supporting roles for a long time due to his origins . In 1998 and 1999 he starred in several Shakespeare plays at the new Globe Theater in London .

He had his breakthrough in 2002 with the police series The Bill , Britcom 15 Storeys High and especially the film Dirty Little Tricks , for which he received a BIFA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, Wong has also been involved in major Hollywood productions such as Prometheus . He also still plays theater, such as Laertes in Hamlet in the Young Vic in 2012, the lead role in #aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei in the Hampstead Theater in 2013 , and the dissident Zhang Lin in Chimerica in the Almeida Theater .

Since 2014 he can be seen in the Netflix series Marco Polo , where he plays the leading role of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan . For the role, he gained over 30 pounds (about 14 kg). In 2016 he took over the role of Dr. Stephen Strange's ally Wong in the Marvel comic book adaptation Doctor Strange .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
