action

David Copperfield grew old reading memoirs to people in the open air. He tells them about his amiable single mother, her sister-in-law, his aunt Betsey Trotwood, and the family housekeeper, Mrs. Peggotty. After his mother married Edward Murdstone, he was beaten by him. Although he cannot read well, little David draws everything he observes. His stepfather sends him to London, where he works in a bottle factory for about a decade.

After his mother dies, David goes to Dover to find the only family he knows. Aunt Betsey turns out to be more generous than expected, but her country house, where she lives with her cousin Mr. Dick, is a madhouse. Aunt Betsey only calls David the "Trotwood Copperfield".

reception

Reviews

The film has so far convinced 93 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.5 out of a possible 10 points. Critics repeatedly highlighted the color blindness in the cast, which is good for the film.

Peter Debruge of Variety writes Armando Iannuccis film THAT CONDITION bright, carefree and be a corrective to the boring and dry Charles Dickens -Adaptionen that existed before. The film is an attempt to free the writer from the musty category of "literary figures" and to show him again for what he was, someone with a sense of humor who was ahead of his time. Iannucci's sensitivity to the Victorian era is timely, and in that sense the film is similar to Tony Richardson's Tom Jones - Between Bed and Gallows .

Eric Kohn from Indie Wire says the cast is always convincing. David Copperfield learns in the film to find himself by working through the many expectations that are placed on him. He is at the heart of this most famous coming-of-age story in the world, and Dev Patel plays this role with the utmost conviction.
