The 33rd European Film Awards ceremony took place between December 9 and 12, 2020. After this was originally supposed to be held in Reykjavík , the gala was canceled in October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Instead, the winners were announced in several virtual ceremonies from Berlin . The prize is awarded by the European Film Academy (EFA). Thomas Vinterberg's social satire Der Rausch prevailed as the best film and turned four of its nominations into victories.

Full nominations were announced on November 10, 2020 during a live stream at the Seville European Film Festival .

Award ceremony

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the award winners were announced in several virtual ceremonies without a studio audience from Berlin. The live streams started at 8 p.m., which is why they were also called The EFAs at Eight (German: "The European Film Awards at eight (o'clock)"):

The jury awards (EFA Excellence Awards) were announced on December 9, 2020. The jury consisted of the sound engineer Marta Billingsley (Italy), the film composer John Gürtler (Germany), the cameraman Rein Kotov (Estonia), the costume designer Catherine Marchand (Belgium), the film editor Jonathan Morris (United Kingdom), the make-up artist Anne Cathrine Sauerberg ( Denmark), the film technician Andraž Sedmak (Slovenia) and the production designer Sylvia Steinbrecht-Aleix (Andorra).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortlist of feature films was presented in two parts. The first part of the shortlist of feature films with 32 films was presented on August 18, 2020, the second part with six films followed on September 22, 2020. This should also allow films whose premiere was planned for May 31, 2020 but due to the pandemic was postponed until the end of November 2020 at the latest.

The 24 short films submitted were selected by independent juries at European film festivals. Five short films were nominated from these and a winner was selected from around 3800 EFA members.
